Designer Notes
Deacon is an almost entirely stock Dark Kodiak, with three modifications:
  • Armor has been increased slightly.
  • The weapons load is lighter than the 1150 horsepower Kodiak engine is accustomed to carry, and as a result, Deacon's speed is Kodiak standard rather than Kodiak Destroyer standard.
  • Finally, much of the space previously given over to approximately 600 rounds of 11mm Heavy Machine Gun ammunition has been filled instead with Abaline Tactical Systems TOC-15 tactical coordination computer (from a Hunter Spearhead) feeding combat data into the holographic helmet interface of Deacon's pilot.

Deacon's weapon load is not particularly unusual, save for the primary weapon which has been replaced with the Thunderclap II Field Gun developed by Paxton Arms for the Elite program's heaviest Gears. This is a clip-fed affair able to be fired both directly and indirectly, but requires an action to change clips. The exposed clips combined with the great length of this gun make Deacon somewhat susceptible to fire control system damage. Deacon's secondary weapon can be adjusted depending on mission needs, but the default secondary weapon is a heavy rocket pack. Captain Gabriel Tynes, Deacon's pilot, is not a believer in Gear hand-held weaponry, and as a result, Deacon carries a "sidearm": a light pulse laser cannon with a limited number of shots fed by Deacon's superconducting batteries. The torso heavy machine guns common to all Kodiaks have been retained, though the ammunition has been reduced to make room for the tactical computer. The tactical computer does have one minor drawback: when in use, the heat it generates cannot be easily vented thanks to Deacon's life support system, and as a result, the cockpit can get uncomfortably hot with the computer in use.

One other minor modification has been made to the Gear's electronics: the enhanced sensors normally included with the Dark Kodiak have been removed, and replaced with an enhanced communications system. Captain Tynes prefers to rely on his scouts and forward observers for sensor data, but also relies on secure and reliable communications with his team.
