The ship had no official designation -- only a construction record,
Liberator Flight 3, Hull 12 -- but Tebrun Lora Kor walked her deck all
the same. It was the very least that he could do: conduct an
inspection and wish this small craft well on the eve of battle.
After recovering the Liberator from the disruptive energy field
surrounding the anomaly, Commander Farley and his prime engineering team
had gone to work on the Wraith class corvette, bringing her systems back
on line and confirming that the modifications done to her were to the
Admiral's satisfaction. With the Xur apparently repulsed for the
moment, there was -- for a change -- enough time to do the work
properly.
And now, in an hour or so, the Liberator would be launched into the
anomaly. There, her high-energy systems would engage, hopefully sealing
the anomaly from within, probably destroying the small craft in the
process. If the idea worked as planned, then the sacrifice of Admiral
Wallace's ship would not have been in vain, those many months before.
A small group of similarly modified Liberators could be kept docked to
the central platform in Xanadu, and piloted out on remote as needed to
seal any future anomalies that Xanadu moved to isolate and stabilize.
The ship's engines and hull were reinforced against the gravitational
stresses that she would soon encounter; her energy projectors were
tuned. Everything that could be done, had been done. The ship was
ready. There was no logical reason for Lora Kor to be aboard, but he
walked the deck just the same, touching this and that.
And generally wishing the small ship well on the journey that it would
soon be taking, alone.
----------------
Olmy watched, but did not interfere. If those occupying Xanadu wished
to do his work for him, he would let them.
And he would wonder how it was that the Engineer had been so mistaken;
how such frightful consequences of the construction of The Way could be
missed.
