 "What have you got for me, Owens?" Rear Admiral Todd Marshall asked.

 "Admiral, I think we've finally cracked the code on the Jjaro point
 defense weapons," Lt. Commander Jim Owens said.  "Remember component
 N-14?  The one we could never determine the function for?"

 Marshall nodded.  "What about it?"

 "I finally figured out what it's doing.  It's a replicator, or as close
 to one as makes no difference.  The weapon's fusing chamber is 'built'
 from false matter."

 "Iteration 13 situation report.

 "Well, I can hardly blame anyone but myself for this one.  In seven
 prior iterations -- and now, in this one -- I've seen this pattern
 before.  The Sarisian government obviously looks at any diplomatic
 mission conducted by one person as a feint by the forces loyal to
 General Thosis.  They don't take it at face value.  They're never going
 to take it at face value.  That approach simply is not going to work,
 and the previous iterations should have convinced me of this.

 "The Sarisian government is simply too entrenched, too paranoid.  Even
 what should be seen as a chance encounter is regarded as a threat. 
 Eight approaches, from the straightforward to disguising myself as a
 trader or freighter captain haven't worked, and are unlikely to work.

 "In short, I've exhausted all possible approaches working alone.

 "Damn them.  It's not supposed to be this difficult.

 "However, another possibility for the next iteration has occurred to me.
 While en route back to the trigger to begin another iteration, I
 encountered U.S.S. Coronado again, patrolling near the trigger point. 
 They interfered with a previous iteration by entering the Saris system. 
 However, I had a bit of a brainstorm.  They entered at high speed, while
 pursuing my ship.  The Sarisian government is obviously going to look at
 that kind of approach as aggressive and adversarial.

 "However, a different kind of approach in a ship Coronado's size might
 have a different effect.

 "It's a possibility worth spending an iteration, just to see if it has
 merit, at least.  As long as they've troubled themselves to interfere
 once, I may as well get them involved in a future iteration.  Peace is
 worth a little inconvenience.
