The holographic display was really starting to firm up, so to speak.

Seven stars were within the field of the nebula. Two were young blue
stars, two were red giants, two were yellow dwarfs, one was an orange
dwarf star. On the holographic display, the gravity fields of the
various stars were visible, all of them rotating around a central point
even as they expanded away from each other. Two overlapping fields of
energy were now also visible, though many parts of them were still
translucent as the Spectres continued their patrol.

Looking much like a pair of rotating fans, each of the two overlapping
fields of energy were made up of four "blades" each, revolving along
perpendicular courses around a central point. At first, it looked as if
one of the red giant stars was that central point, but on closer
inspection, the actual vertex was in orbit around the red giant.
General Ironside tapped one of the displays to roll it back in time...
and it clearly showed Coronado within one of the fields at the time the
 ansible failed.

Ironside and Colonel Prescot were warriors, not scientists, and other
than making sure Coronado and the Spectres stayed out of the actual
fields, were content to guide the fighters as they finished their work.
Nearby, though, Savant, Commander Drexler, Lieutenant Brooks, and
Admiral Lora Kor were going over the display with increasing excitement.
At this point, the Marine General could follow no more than one
conversation thread in three as the talk between them became more and
more technical. Finally, though, Lora Kor broke away from the others
 and headed for the replicator.

"Admiral, if you don't mind me asking..." Ironside said, approaching.

"What are we looking at?" Lora Kor said, chuckling.

Ironside nodded, also chuckling. "That obvious?" he asked.

Lora Kor smiled, shrugging. "I'm sorry: it's fascinating. You know,
it's times like this I wonder why I got out of the science game," he
said, then turned to the replicator. "Tea, peppermint." He turned back
to the General. "After Xanadu finished its work in the J043 system,
we've had science teams trying to pick up the pieces of what happened
with the temporal anomalies in the system." Ironside nodded.

The Admiral turned around and leaned against the wall and indicated the
holographic display that Drexler, Savant, and Brooks were still
studying. "We've been picking up a residual energy signature from the
vertex of that formation that matches the energy signatures in J043 to
six places," Lora Kor said, voice mild.

Ironside blinked. "You're saying that Xanadu has been here? That one
of those anomalies has formed here?" he asked.

Lora Kor smiled, a little sly. "Nope," he said. "Or at least,
Savant's been in contact with Alicia, and she has no records of this
 system."

 "But that would mean..."

"That the energy signature is a possible indicator that we're going to
have one of those temporal anomalies in this system, yes," the Admiral
said. "It might even be the reason that the Watchers can't influence
 events here."
