"Almost 120 years ago, the officers and crew of U.S.S. Churchill
came to this place... built a city... made a life. And for the last
twelve decades, their descendants have lived and loved, raised
families and dreams, defended this place that is our home.
"Some have given their lives for this place, and all here now know
the sacrifices that have been made so that we could live here, free
of tyranny in the homes that we have built and suffered for.
"And every year at this time, we look outward... Churchill still
watches over us, and every year, she has been sent away from us...
ironically looking for something we never realized we already had...
a way home.
"In the end, it took 5,000 new homesteaders to remind us what we
have here. To make us take a look around, and see that this
place... this place is our home. Already, many of those come to us
only 30 months ago have made our home theirs. I see among you
people who would not return to the Milky Way if you could. I see
among you people who have called your families here from the Milky
Way, and whose families have answered the call. People who have
chosen to build... to rebuild... with us here. Reor'sa is every bit
as much your home as it is mine.
"Today is the first day of winter. For one hundred seventeen
years... as time is measured on Earth... we have sent Churchill
outward, looking for a way home. But in those one hundred seventeen
years, we have done this ninety-nine times, for this tradition takes
place on the first day of winter as time is measured on Reor'sa, in
Churchill Downs, in M64. Every year, the calendars of Earth seem a
little more distant to us.
"Today is the first day of winter. And as time is measured on
Reor'sa, this planet has orbited her star one hundred times since
that first patrol... since that starship's crew looked out to the
stars with hope of finding a way back to the Milky Way. As time is
measured on Reorsa, this is the first day of Winter, year one
hundred.
"And as those on Earth sometimes measured a 'new era' by the turning
of a few zeroes on a calendar, now we have a choice to make. 5,000
new arrivals have come, and shown us that the patrol cannot find a
way home, because the patrol must leave home to do it. Thousands
more have arrived from the Milky Way, from space to our south,
north, west, and east, to share our home with us.
"Today is the first day of winter, and tradition tells us that the
patrol must be sent out. But on this first day of winter, year one
hundred, we send out the patrol, not to find a way home... but in
renewed hope and defense of the home we already have.
"Today is the first day of winter, and from this day forward, we
look not to the past, but to the future. In a moment, like all of
you, I will look to the stars and watch our defenders begin the
Patrol, the flashing light of their engines announcing another year
of star flight.
"But when I hope that they find their way home... I mean that I hope
they find their way back to Reor'sa, to their friends, their
families... to their home.
"Thank you, and let the Patrol begin anew!"
