Savant, by her very nature, was one of the first Defenders to touch
the new data. Nearly 400,000 gigaquads, neatly stored, compiled,
and organized, nearly all of it entirely new information unknown to
Reorsan science or diplomacy. 823 new worlds orbiting 1,324
stars... four dozen intelligent species, hundreds of vertebrate life
forms, thousands of bio-scans.
The sweep of the information was immense, covering space north and
west of Reor'sa from Tarndare and extending for nearly 750 light-
years in a 70 degree pie wedge slicing through all three dimensions.
Granted, there were great holes in the data, representing former
Pfhor strongholds that had been unapproachable. Nevertheless, the
scope of the information available was impressive for its
completeness.
All of it entered into evidence for the court-martial of Captain
Teresa Valentine.
Reor'sa was a small planet, and it didn't take long for the story to
break. The Reorsan Times kept it the most simple:
DAUNTLESS SPENT SIX YEARS BEHIND PFHOR LINES
"Mission of exploration, not treason," Dauntless crew member insists.
Here, then, an offering... an atonement. 400,000 gigaquads in
payment for Dauntless's refusal to die at Pfhor hands. Savant was
unaffected by the need for revenge... unaffected by the human need
to blame others for hardships... unaffected by the need to hate
others for not sharing in those hardships, for turning a blind eye
to suffering, for failing to help a friend or family member in need.
But greed, the hunger for acquisition -- in Savant's case, the
desire for knowledge -- was not in any way alien to her. And it
certainly was not alien to those in the Reorsan Ministry of Defense,
who saw in the data the safety of their planet for decades to come.
