It seemed that half the video screens on Reor'sa were displaying the
image or some variation of it: a half-dozen views of R.S. Dauntless
orbiting the planet. Some of the views were from high-resolution
ground-based telescopes either on Reor'sa itself or on the surface
of the planet's single moon, Quaati'sa. One exceptional view was
provided by Homeworld Starbase, another by a surveillance satellite
a few hundred kilometers ahead of the starship in the same orbit.

It was -- far and away -- the biggest story in Churchill Downs since
the end of the War. The city's half-dozen major news organizations
were all covering the story at length. The lurid headline of one
news print screamed DAUNTLESS FOREVER! The more sedate Reorsan
Times stuck with something more traditional: DAUNTLESS COMES HOME.

The fact that 312 Klingons had mysteriously appeared in Xanadu's
Fourth Chamber rarely rated anything more than page three.

Rear Admiral Tebrun Lora Kor sat in the reception area of the
Reorsan Starfleet Admiralty, watching one of the monitors displaying
the image... live, they pointed out often, as if Dauntless were
going anywhere. In this particular image, a Camelynian Sword class
destroyer was visible in orbit behind Dauntless, apparently in a
somewhat higher orbit given the relative motion of the two ships.
Lora Kor was trying to make out the name on the white-winged ship
 when a voice interrupted him.

"Welcome back, Admiral," the voice said, and Lora Kor looked up to
see Vice Admiral Brian Aldur looking down at him. Aldur's face was
unreadable. "You're fortunate this is not the Milky Way," he said.
"Else, instead of being debriefed by me, you would no doubt now be
given over to the tender mercies of the Department of Temporal
 Investigations."

Lora Kor allowed himself a wince. "Then I remain grateful that this
is not the Milky Way, Admiral," he said, standing. Unconsciously,
he touched the golden eagle pin on his sleeve collar as he did so, a
motion he was only aware of when he realized that Aldur was watching
 him do it.

"Don't get quite so smug, Admiral," Aldur said. "Charlie Theron
connected your name to the word court-martial in my hearing, and
he'd probably press the matter, too, if he didn't have a rather
higher profile court-martial to attend to."

Lora Kor decided to look surprised. "Me? What did I do?" he asked.
He didn't add that Theron shouldn't be too hard on Captain
Valentine; he'd already made his case for her over ansible.

Aldur actually smirked. "Aside from your role in Dauntless'
disappearance, I know enough about Klingon law to know that the High
Council back in the Milky Way would probably regard what you did as
kidnapping or worse," he said. From Aldur's expression, this didn't
seem to bother the man over much. "Our new arrivals settling in?"

The Trill Admiral allowed himself a shrug. "As well as can be
expected. General Ironside is seeing to their needs for the
 moment," he said.

Aldur nodded, then turned and led Lora Kor further into the
Admiralty, toward his office. The Trill Admiral followed. "The
Camelynians are here seeking permission to annex a class M planet
they've discovered in Grid 005, by the way," Aldur said as he
walked. The older man then looked over his shoulder at Lora Kor.
"That was why you were staring at their destroyer, wasn't it?"

"Actually, Admiral," Lora Kor said, "I was a bit more curious about
why I was recalled from Xanadu. I'm sure by now that Doctor Reed
 has contacted you..."

"Not once, but many times," Aldur said. "I was told -- at great
length, let me assure you -- that being outside Xanadu could
actually be life-threatening for you," he added. If that concern
bothered Aldur, he didn't show it. Or perhaps he simply didn't
 believe what Reed told him.

Aldur led the younger man into his office, closing the door behind
the two of them. Lora Kor noted with a touch of amusement that the
space was as Spartan as any other room he'd seen Aldur occupy for
any length of time -- did the man have any possessions other than
that ancient sword of his and the enormous desk the Camelynians
insisted that he use? Aldur sat down behind it and indicated a
chair across from him, which Kor took, nodding as he did so.

"I'm sure it's not quite as serious as all that," Lora Kor said, not
quite sure that he believed it, "but I'm sure you had good reason,
particularly devoting an Arrow to my trip."

Aldur nodded. "We're keeping it fairly quiet -- happily, rather
easy given the bomb you decided to drop on the planet..." Aldur
gave the younger man an amused look. "But the Camelynians and
Dauntless aren't Reor'sa's only visitors lately, and this is the
sort of visit that you'll have to deal with in person."
