First Contact Team Bravo
Homeworld Starbase, Reor'sa
Preliminary Report Summary
Subject lifeform: Reference 927, embedded into Reorsan Patrol Craft 6/4
and other affected small craft and starships.
Lifeform science team study complete.
Lifeform is silicon-based tendril analogue, possibly the physical
representation of some sort of hive consciousness (see Science report
lifeform reference 927). Contact team examined active sample of
approximately 127.4 kilograms mass embedded into Reorsan Patrol Craft
6/4, 100 CD Summer 14. While Contact Team Bravo agrees that this
sample is without question a lifeform of significant complexity, team
questions whether an active intelligence is involved or if lifeform is
operating on instinct and/or programmed behavior.
In the absence of outside stimuli, lifeform evidences no outward
activity and seems to go into a dormant state. Various stimuli all
produced similar response: to wit, the lifeform attempts to absorb any
and all sources of active energy used in close proximity to its
threshold perimeter. Greater energy expenditures increase perimeter
radius, while smaller energy expenditures may be attempted at smaller
perimeter radii (sample contacts, 927.11 through 927.28 attached). In
all cases, response was proportional to energy expenditure in
vicinity.
Close approach of biological lifeforms also produced an energetic
response, in a radius approximately equal to the long axis length of
the lifeform in question.
Lifeform reference 927 appeared to have absorbed one humanoid subject
at some point in the past; contact team not given appropriate detail
from which to work. However, attempts to contact humanoid subject
failed and sensor equipment was compromised during scanning attempt.
It is strongly recommended that sensors of any type be prohibited from
use in proximity to lifeform reference 927 and similar forms. Contact
team was told by Reorsan Security that weapons fire in region of
lifeform produced similar effect. Contact Team Bravo noted three
weapons of Phaser IIb type embedded in tendrils.
All attempts at communication failed (see sample communication
attempts, 927.29 through 927.41). In three cases, communications
equipment was absorbed when communications energy expenditure
presumably exceeded energy threshold perimeter values.
All contact attempts of same type produced similar results at similar
threshold values. At no point did sample vary from these observed
behaviors. As a result, four of five Contact Team Bravo members
believe that response is either instinctual or programmed. In either
case, lifeform reference 927 can be regarded as non-intelligent and
unlikely to produce meaningful intelligent contact.
Permission to terminate lifeform reference 927 and all similar forms
is therefore granted under contact rules established for possible
Threat lifeforms in partial/complete control of Reorsan Defender
starships and facilities. Given lifeform reference 927's presence in
the command cockpit of Patrol Craft 6/4, there is no question that
this condition holds in this case.
Minority Contact Report Summary
One member of Contact Team Bravo believes that lifeform reference 927
may have a threshold energy/mass/absorption point at which point
lifeform will "wake up" and evidence more intelligent behavior.
Providing sufficient absorption energy to test this theory was judged
too high risk to Contact Team members and other Defender personnel in
area. Theory not tested.
REPORT SUMMARY ENDS. FULL REPORT ATTACHED.
