Interview notes: Former Reorsan President Jason Rommetty, 19 Summer CD 101
Interview conducted by: Torias Sullivan, Reorsan News Service
BEGIN RECORDING EXCERPT.
JR: Why did we do it? One could just as easily ask why we didn't give
up with the Pfhor occupied Reor'sa, or why the first descendants just
didn't roll over and die that first winter. Captain Fisher stood up
and demanded at that first Party that Reorsans take control of our own
destinies. We were being prevented from doing that, and it isn't in
our planetary culture to allow that.
Keep in mind what was happening at the time. Massive cultural change
only happens when there is a serious catalyst involved, and that was
certainly the case here!
From all accounts, Reor'sa was facing her greatest crisis. The senior
Starfleet Admirals were talking about destroying Xanadu, and we were
reading the reports that said we had months -- only months! -- before
the Tears smashed everything and everyone we knew. When the Hexamon
representatives came, and we were told that negotiations would take
place inside Xanadu and that Starfleet would be in charge... well,
that just brought the political situation to a head.
We were facing our end -- our end! And the Starfleet Admirals were
telling us not to worry, that everything would be fine, that they had
a plan. To be fair, the guns of the Pfhor War hadn't even stopped
echoing, but they were still running matters like Reor'sa was a
military dictatorship. We couldn't stand by and let that happen.
RNS: You've read the recent release of Admiral Aldur's memoirs, of
course.
JR: Yes I have, and we knew at the time that most of the senior
Starfleet Admimrals were either sympathetic to our cause or were
openly wearing the eagle by that time. Charlie Theron, of course, was
100% behind us. We also knew at the time that then-Vice Admiral Brian
Aldur had received orders from the Milky Way to use any and all means
necessary to take his ships and his people back there... and we knew
he wasn't happy about those orders.
Reviewing the history of the last few decades of Federation politics
and policies has been instructive, let me tell you! But I feel for
the people of Codis and of the other planets lost in their last war.
Rome cut loose some of her outlying provinces, too, before she fell.
RNS: Mister President, there are some facts that are unclear in the
timing of the call you made to Vice Admiral Aldur, and how that came
about.
JR: Well, I'd be happy to do whatever I can to clarify that, of
course.
RNS: Thank you. For one, was the meeting with the Apori already
on-going at the time, or was it called as a response to the Xanadu
crisis?
JR: It had been scheduled and was already under way. Serendipity...
or fate, if you prefer. The Apori had assisted with a recent military
engagement and Iktakto'na'ri was on Reor'sa, eager to discuss stronger
ties. As you well know, they were one of the earliest proponents of
a stronger alliance, particularly given their religious obligations in
the matter. The Boratis mission was also already well under way at
that time and there were weekly meetings happening with them.
The Boratis Ambassador was in my office, in fact, when I first heard
about the arrival of the Hexamon Advocate Suli Ram Kikura. Heads of
state are people, with sentient strengths and foibles. When that
communication was over, I expressed my... indignation about the matter
to the Ambassador.
RNS: When was the first plenary session called?
JR: Hm. I'd have to check my records. The Starfleet meetings with
the Nexus representatives happened over the space of nine or ten days,
if memory serves. I know we were well along by the day of their third
meeting with the Advocate. That would have been 22 Spring. So that
date will do as well as any.
RNS: 22 Spring CD 100?
JR: That's right.
RNS: Whose idea was it to call that first session?
JR: Well, that gets a little complicated. The Boratis Ambassador,
being Boratis, shared what he had heard in my office with his Apori
counterpart...
RNS: -- and Apori are an emotional people at the best of times.
JR: (laughs) Too right. Put it on one person, and I'd have to say it
was the Apori Speaker's idea, because he'd been pushing for stronger
ties for months. Iktakto and Calamar Turnam, the Boratis Ambassador,
got together and brought the idea to me. I conferred with Raynar
O'Hara, who was Governor of the Artemis colony and King Henry on Meyer
III (JR insert to editor: King Henry Gaveston-Tudor of Camelyn) and
they were all for it.
So, the five of us formed the core of the group, but as I said,
Iktakto probably bears the bulk of the credit or the blame. (laughs)
RNS: What about the Z'hora, the Kioth, and the Ji'sa?
JR: The Camelynians brought in the Ji'sa, the Apori brought in the
Z'hora, and when I saw which way the wind was blowing, I invited the
Kioth Ambassador myself. Jia Ron Drull invited himself, as an
"interested fellow participant in galactic affairs," I believe he put
it.
RNS: So, nine of you, when the call to Admiral Aldur was made.
JR: That's right. Todd Marshall later called us "the Fellowship," and
he's told me the reference, though I've forgotten it. He seemed to
find it amusing, though, nine of us going after our own militaries the
way we did.
RNS: OK, let's talk about the call itself.
