Blackrazor's tiny medical bay barely had the space to do the work. As
it was, Doctor Rachel Kennedy had only two attending physicians
assisting her. If all went well, it would be more than sufficient.
She glanced over at Doctor Taylor, who was acting as the
anesthesiologist. He nodded. "Blood pressure 100 over 70, EEG looks
good. Everything's normal," he said.
Soft-Curl, one of the Braid residents, was the other assistant. So
far as Kennedy knew, this was the first time a Braid had been present
for a Trill symbiont implantation. Soft-Curl had been full of
questions about the procedure and found it a fascinating -- and if
what Kennedy suspected was true, slightly disgusting -- concept.
Still, the Braid's "hands" were sure, more sure than any humanoid's
could be given that she had nearly 20 of them; Kennedy would let Curl
handle the actual implantation.
One of the Braid's heads nodded as Kennedy looked over. "She-they are
ready, and her pouch seal is broken," it said. "I believe we are
ready to proceed."
"Very well," Kennedy said, looking over at the clock. "Implantation
procedure begins at 0640. Releasing symbiont from stasis." She
pivoted to her left to the stasis field where the Kor symbiont lay.
Deactivating the field, the symbiont showed signs of life nearly at
once. She gently lifted it from the field chamber and before passing
the symbiont to Curl, took one last look at the young Trill on the
operating table. Other than her pouch, every part of her body was
covered except her face.
Despite her 22 years, she seemed impossibly young.
