 It started out as any other boojum sighting.

 1st Lieutenant Mark Divas was leading his platoon on a routine
 patrol of the southern approaches to Alexandria when they entered a
 tree-lined clearing on the slopes of Mount Abora.

 Two people were waiting for them there.  One of them appeared to be
 a human male on first sight, but few human males approached this
 man's 2.5 meters tall and 1.5 meters wide.  The other "person" was
 four-legged and white-furred, with a long face and large eyes. 
 Divas had heard about boojum sightings -- people saw humanoids,
 ships, sometimes small floaters.  They appeared for a few seconds,
 and then they were gone.

 These two were different.  They did not disappear, and if they were
 surprised to encounter a platoon of heavily-armed Marines, they did
 not show it.  They certainly also did not show any fear.  They
 waited patiently as Divas made a quick motion with his hand,
 deploying 2nd Platoon, Bravo around them.  Finally, the man smiled
 pleasantly.

 "Hello," he said at last, addressing Divas.  "I am Olmy," he said. 
 "My companion is a Frant.  If it is not too much trouble, I wish to
 speak with someone in authority."
