 =/.= The Spindle =/.=

 On the Spindle, some threads are particularly strong and resilient,
 woven about with related threads and loops.  Had the Ĉon had language
 in the traditional sense, they would have referred to such a
 formation as a "spool."  Spools were at once the strongest and most
 delicate of formations under the protection of the Eternal.  Strength
 came from infinite possibilities.  Some beings in the matter matrix
 along a spool could sometimes almost touch the other threads... sense
 the alternate possibilities.  Others could actually touch the threads
 themselves, unknowingly travelling from thread to thread and changing
 their reality in the process.

 One species had even found a way to link to a thread directly... move
 themselves along it, taking advantage of the possibilities inherent
 in the thread.

 Spools were treasured for their strength -- only the strongest
 threads survived the Adversary -- but spools required eternal
 vigilance.  Weakness came from this inter-relatedness as well: a flaw
 opened along one thread of a spool could swiftly spread to the
 others, putting the entire spool at risk.  The Ĉon referred to such a
 flaw as a "tear"... and where tears formed, the threads
 intermingled... twisted... knotted.

 Where tears formed, interventions were nearly always required. 
 Allies were nearly always found in such interventions, allies whose
 goals and ideals were similar to their own.  The Eternal gathered
 their allies in this fashion, and their Adversary worked in much the
 same way.

 And only sometimes did these allies reveal themselves to those around
 them before battle was joined...
