The program was deceptively simple.
310 megaquads of data had been downloaded from the Jjaro defense
tower at the Eye, as it was slowly coming to be called. All but the
first few bits of that data were encrypted, however. The portion
that wasn't encrypted was diabolical in its simplicity.
The program that would release the data encryption made it clear that
when the proper pass code was used, two-thirds of the accumulated
data would be deleted, the remainder decrypted. Recovering all of
the data was impossible: decrypting the data would result in the
majority of it being destroyed.
Even worse, the program implied that the portions of the data that
would be displayed or destroyed would differ based on what pass code
was used. Use the wrong one, and perhaps the data decrypted would be
worthless, or misleading... with no way of knowing that this was the
case.
"Pass code" was a misnomer as well; it was obvious that whatever code
was needed to decrypt this data was enormously long, at least 300 to
400 kiloquads: no simple one- or two word phrase here. And nearly
anything could be stored in 300 to 400 kiloquads: an entire
scientific journal article, a personnel record, a historical
reference, a set of schematics... the pass code could literally be
anything.
But why was the needed pass code so long, when the use of it would
result in most of the data it protected being destroyed?
