The revelation that Kishrak had moved Whitestone Enterprise's entire
operation to M64 had come as a surprise to Tebrun Lora Kor, though
it probably shouldn't have.
What had surprised him was the fact that he'd missed their arrival
in M64 in the first place. The Admiral realized that the 17 days
that Coronado and the other ships near Xanadu had spent trapped in
the temporal causality loop had been busy ones. He kept intending
to go through the records to see if he had missed anything else, but
other responsibilities kept cropping up.
Once he had found out about Whitestone's move, however, he'd found
Kishrak's reasoning for moving to be quite sound... for a Ferengi.
"You said that the Milky Way was doomed, unless *I* led an assault
into Borg territory!" Kishrak had said at the time. "It sounded
like suicide, and I am not a stupid Ferengi! Besides, when I told
the design team we could stay entirely out of the peacetime
freighter business, eight of them signed up for the move right
then," he'd said. "War is good for business."
Now that he was here, however, Lora Kor had found his old rapport
with Kishrak was still as sound as ever, and as a result, the two
men chatted every ten days or so via the ansible. Kishrak was also
an excellent source of information. This time, the topic of the
conversation was the secret-not-secret Furious class escorts.
"You don't approve?" Kishrak asked, sipping at a beverage.
"They seem a little aggressive, even for Reorsan use," Lora Kor
said.
The Ferengi shrugged. "I didn't have anything to do with that," he
said. "But I saw Rear Admiral Wallace's orders. 'The gloves come
off' were his exact words, I believe?"
Lora Kor made a face. "Sounds like him," he said. He waved one
hand. "Though the more I see of M64, the more I think his
philosophy is at least partially correct. Heaven only knows what
kind of situations are springing up in the power vacuum left by the
Pfhor," he said.
Kishrak chuckled. "Yes, yes, indeed," he said, "and that means more
Banshees, more Wraiths, more Spectres... and of course Penthia is
buying every White Lightning computer core we can manufacture." The
Ferengi looked extraordinarily smug. "Does it still surprise you
that we moved here? Starfleet ship roles always seemed so...
limiting to me. I'm finding the business opportunities here to be
incredibly liberating!"
The Admiral smirked. "Save it for your stockholders, Kishrak," he
said. "Have you given any thought to my request?"
Kishrak leaned back. "A full disclosure of our sales in Penthia?
You're certainly authorized to that information, but I don't
understand why you might be interested," he said.
"I don't like surprises," Lora Kor said. "You might have known
about the Furious class, but it appeared out of thin air so far as
I'm concerned," he said. "I didn't care for it, and had I known
about it, it would have saved me a sleepless night or two."
Kishrak looked at his old friend appraisingly. "You've grown into
that uniform, haven't you?" he said.
"You have no idea, Kishrak."
----------------
Taeren reconnaissance was good, but was sometimes a little non-
specific. When you have a God-like view of the cosmos, it's tough
to narrow your view enough to pin-point a single system.
As a result, the first ships to reach the vicinity of the blue-grey
sphere attack were forced to fan out to try to pin-point the system
the Taeren had found. Vanguard and Blackrazor were the first two
ships to arrive in the vicinity and quickly began sweeps of their
sectors.
Coronado was the third and as luck would have it hardly had to
search at all before something quite unusual happening in Grid 006
fell practically into the frigate's lap.
