Notes from the Admiral:
A busy and complicated episode, and you guys handled it quite well.
:) The summary is a bit longer than usual this week, as there was
a lot going on, almost all of it important to the overall Coronado
plot for the next year or so. I've seen some very good guesses as
to what this plot might be about... and some very poor guesses. ;)
Nice to know I haven't gotten too predictable.
I've had to accept the resignation of Lt. Commander Kyle Marcy,
until this week Coronado's Chief Tactical Officer. Marcy joined the
sim more than two years ago and in the intervening time, became one
of Coro's most dedicated simmers. We might have made the odd joke
about how trigger happy he was, but I think a lot of us will have a
hard time imagining Tactical without him... Farewell, Marcy, and
come back to us soon if you can!

Sim Title: "Reunion Day", Part 2
Teaser and Pre-Sim:

The Admiral attempts to learn something about what's going on in the
Penthia system from his old friend Kishrak. The Ferengi
businessman, alarmed at the vision of the future provided by Admiral
Lora Kor, apparently decided it would be safer to move his business
to M64 than to attempt to disrupt the Borg's plans in the Milky Way.
In this, he has probably set in motion the eventual destruction of
the Federation. Meanwhile, Coronado reaches Grid 008 and begins a
search for the lifeforms under attack by the blue-grey spheres.
During the Sim:
---------------
The ships of the Defender task force slated to explore Grid 008
reached their objectives one by one. First to arrive were U.S.S.
Vanguard and R.S. Blackrazor, both of which took vectors into the
Grid and began their searches. Coronado took a more logical
approach, using a prior LORASON long-range scan of the region to
decide on a probable target. Captain Daren eventually decided that
the M039 system was our best option for a system containing a class
M planet. Coronado therefore got underway in that direction.
The frigate wasn't moving long before it was clear that Grid 008 was
inhabited, and by at least one highly intelligent species, and
probably two. Vanguard soon reported that there was a battle
underway in the L040 system, and moved to investigate. Meanwhile,
more and more ships arrived in Grid 008, and the Admiralty staff had
their hands full deciding on the best squadrons to attach to what
duties. The Admiral felt it was important that the Grid be searched
thoroughly, even though our target planet could only be in a handful
of systems in the Grid. This strategy was soon disrupted by the
events in L040.
Vanguard reached the system and had enough time to report that there
was a battle in progress there between two unknown species when some
kind of weapon was detonated in the system, blinding sensors in a
wide radius. The Taer, meanwhile, finished a sweep of the M039
system and reported that a single class M planet in that system was
surrounded by a blue-grey globe of crackling energy. Those on the
Bridge decided that M039 might not be an inviting place to visit
after all, and soon asked for a Taeren survey of the L040 system.
This, the Taeren were unable to provide; apparently, they're not
omnipotent after all...
Meanwhile, more and more evidence began piling up that this Grid is
a battle zone. Another zone of sensor interference bloomed, and it
was soon apparent that a second battle was underway in the L042
system, near Coro's position. Captain Daren preferred a very
cautious approach to searching this area... until Coronado came
under direct, long-range attack from a number of missile weapons.
The missiles were of unknown configuration but made the surrounding
space incredibly dangerous, exploding in protomatter inversions. As
a result, Coronado could not hold her position and with few options,
the Admiral ordered the frigate into the L042 system along with a
small escort.
Whether this was a mistake or not remains to be seen, but it was
soon clear that Coro was no safer moving than she was stationary.
A number of small fighters were revealed as the missile-firing
platform, and these fighters attacked both Coronado and Cerberus.
Both ships were able to escape the attacks, but the enemy of the
fighter craft and their carriers, apparently a species that goes to
space in large starfish-shaped vessels, was not. A number of these
starfish were in the process of attacking L042 and were being
destroyed one by one. Coronado seemed well on her way to joining
them until the Admiral took direct charge of the first contact from
Coronado's Bridge.
He ordered Captain Daren to stand down his weapons and prepare to
run... then sent friendship messages and held his breath. A
tentative and tense negotiation soon ensued, with this new species,
the Ryla, demanding to know our intentions. They also mentioned
that they had been attacked in an unprovoked way by the nearby Xur
species, the latter apparently suffering from something called "tar
na zee"... which a bit of circumstantial evidence led us to believe
might be possession by the same entities that subverted Chimaera and
Cerberus in Xanadu space. Further negotiations were interrupted
when the Ryla transmitted that they had discovered that we had the
same life signs as a species known as the "Sharro," and when the
asked if we, the Sharro, had "returned"...
