The next episode was written by Brad, aka Commander Sieven Drexler,
and offers a chance to slow things down a little and get back into a
character development mode, at least for a while. ;) Brad will be
running parts two and three of that episode, but I'll get things
started on Monday.

Sim Title: "The Thousand Ships", Part 3
Teaser and Pre-Sim:

83 years in the future -- or is it thousands of years in the past?
-- Captain Walker Kile considers the very bad position the fleet
with him is in. Passing through the exodus hypergate has trapped 88
starships and the asteroid-starship Xanadu tens of thousands of
years in the past. The ships have little choice, however, but to
proceed on to the M64 Galaxy...
During the Sim:
---------------
Coro's crew has completed a false matter shielded probe. The probe
is armed with the holographic message programmed by Rear Admiral
Lora Kor and prepared for launch. Coronado plans to slip close
enough to the planet to launch the probe, which hopefully will not
be destroyed by the Traxati in the process. Lt. Commander Dyson has
determined that the Traxati can detect any object in their space
that creates a gravity well, and use this ability for targeting.
Since the probe is completely surrounded by its false matter shield,
it is in effect "cloaked" from this sort of detection and Coro
manages to slip the probe into orbit of Enigma without the probe
being detected. Coro herself is not nearly so lucky -- she comes
under immediate and ferocious attack from a large number of weapon
probes. At first, though certainly distracting, the attack seems
more or less routine: Coro's own false matter shields protect her
from the Traxati weapons.
However, the false matter shields were never intended for an all-
around defense: Coronado does not have the power necessary for this
sort of defense -- no starship does. Coro is also late getting
weapons charged and into the fight and as a result, the frigate is
soon badly surrounded. Eventually, one of the tiny neutronium
needles penetrates and enters Coro. The needle does only moderate
damage in and of itself but in the midst of this penetration,
Captain Daren orders Coronado to warp to escape the remaining
Traxati weapon-probes.
This turns out to be a disaster. The needle, though small, is made
of neutronium and cannot be contained in Coro's warp field. As a
result, Coro goes to warp leaving the needle behind -- but not
before the needle exits the ship with catastrophic and explosive
force, virtually destroying deck 20 in the process. The entire deck
is sealed off, but this introduces two new dangers. First, Coro's
antimatter bottles are stored on deck 20 and the needle only just
misses penetrating one of them. What the needles DO penetrate is
one of the feed lines leading from the bottles to the antimatter
injector in Engineering.
As a result, the antimatter injector shuts down, bringing Coro from
warp, and the ship's safety protocols engage, sealing off the
antimatter line leak and shutting down main power. The damage is
safely isolated, but without main power or the ability to escape a
second Traxati if needed, the mission is over. A team had boarded
Kelaka to activate the holographic probe, but Rear Admiral Lora Kor
orders the team back to Coro until the frigate can be repaired
sufficiently to at least run away if the Traxati react badly to the
probe. Reluctantly, the Kelaka team comes home and repairs to
Coronado begin.
