"Eighteen centimeters?"
"Yes, sir," Lt. Commander Jim Owens said. "There is sufficient
power in the Xanadu Catapult to open a rift to Earth, but that rift
will only be 18 centimters wide. It will persist for 16 hours just
like a standard rift, though," he said.
Vice Admiral Brian Aldur frowned, then nodded. "Very well," he said
at last. "Can you devise a communications relay that will allow us
to transmit through the rift for that 16 hours, Commander?"
"Easily, Admiral."
"Then please do so, and inform all ship's crews that we'll be
opening a rift to Earth in seven days time. If anyone aboard any
ship has information, personal logs, data, or letters home that they
wish to send back to the Milky Way, the communications link will be
available to do so."

Rear Admiral Tebrun Lora Kor looked at his new bright shiny medal
and could have cried with frustration.
Hundreds were dead, hundreds more maimed or wounded. The heart of
Starfleet in the M64 galaxy had been cut out and stomped on by the
Pfhor battle group before its own eventual destruction. Churchill
Downs was a wasteland, and virtually everything that the exiles had
built here was damaged or destroyed.
And yet, the Pfhor had been destroyed at Xanadu, and Admiral Charlie
Theron had seen fit to give him a medal for it.
It was time to rebuild... rebuild Churchill Downs, rebuild Fisher's
Landing, rebuild the Defender fleet. It was time for the exiles to
rebuild their shattered lives.
Lora Kor had tried to respectfully refuse the medal, but Theron had
become insistent. "Admiral," he'd said finally, "it's your duty to
accept this. The work ahead of us is every bit as hard as the work
behind, and our people need symbols. They need, quite frankly, a
few heroes from this whole sorry affair. And as long as you choose
to wear that eagle," Theron said, pointing at Lora Kor's sleeve,
"you're elected. And so are the officers under your command. See
to it."
Rear Admiral Tebrun Lora Kor had been all too happy to take care of
the latter; it even occurred to him that some of his officers might
feel the same way he did about it, but he spent three hours doing
the paperwork and adding the appropriate notations to each officer's
record all the same.
Theron was right. Reor'sa was a mess, and would need a few heroes.
