Notes from the Captain:
For those who haven't been paying attention, it's been a pretty busy
week in UCIP land. This week, the Acting Deputy Commander in Chief,
the Acting KDF Fleet Commander, and the Acting Deputy KDF Fleet
Commander all resigned UCIP. One KDF sim has withdrawn from the
group, as have two other KDF development sims. There's been an on-
going argument about a number of subjects, but in particular the
aborted Bergen process and how simmers and sims are treated in UCIP.
Don't ask me how it's all going to turn out. ;)
In the meantime, though, Coronado's simmers have a bit of a decision
to make. One of our number, Archyyt, aka 2nd Lieutenant Mikhail
Petkovic, has been summarily removed from UCIP. Though Archyyt
hasn't been a member of the sim long, this is not something that I
take or treat lightly. He is the third active Coronado member to
have such an incident affect his ability to attend Coro sims, and
for this reason, I want to have a bit of a crew meeting to discuss
the situation.
As a result, during tomorrow's sim (16 September 2002),
#uss-coronado-ooc will be barred to all guests and visitors so that
Coro's crew can discuss the matter in private. I therefore
encourage all Coro simmers to join that channel as soon as possible
before tomorrow's sim.

Sim Title: "King's Gambit", Part 2
Teaser and Pre-Sim:
-------------------
A meeting between old friends takes place aboard Crystal Palace as
Rear Admiral Dev Wallace meets with Vice Admiral Aldur and Rear
Admiral Marshall. After gently ribbing the new arrival for a few
minutes, Aldur and Marshall settle in to brief Wallace on the Pfhor
Hegemony and get any insights the latter may have on how to exploit
possible weaknesses in the Hegemony's politics.
During the Sim:
---------------
After recovering the Whitestone group, including two capital ships
and 24 Banshees, from the Gateway system, Coronado returns to the
new Defender staging area. Thanks to both a ready-to-go escape plan
and S'buuth's intervention, all major Defender ships successfully
escaped the Pfhor ambush on our previous staging area. This
location is no more safe, thanks to the Pfhor's ability to generate
a gravity well wherever they like, but at least this location is
secret for the moment.
Vice Admiral Aldur has indicated that Taeren reconnaissance has
uncovered a possible Jjaro energy signature in a system deep in
Pfhor-controlled space. Due to the system's location, openly
sending Defender ships into the system would be impossible. The
ships would be nearly immediately attacked, AND would reveal the
possible Jjaro presence to the Pfhor. He therefore conceived a new
plan: to send Defender ships to the system inside the cavernous
docking bays of the Pfhor cruiser we have christened Masada. The
enormous spaces are sufficient to carry Coronado, R.S. Vanquish, and
several squadrons of smaller ships.
Some very careful flying on the part of Caring-Thoughts and
Vanquish's helmsman put the two capital ships within the docking
bays of Masada. Colonel Wayne then guides his Wraith squadron into
place, followed by three squadrons of Defender fighters of various
types. Masada then engages her drives, creating a fold to the
target system, designated "Longshot." During the fold, a number of
the ship's crew, including Rear Admiral Lora Kor, experience strong
adverse reactions to the experience. This is complicated by the
fact that Masada's initial jump into the system places her too close
to the Longshot star, and she is endangered by a solar flare. A
second jump places the ship at a safer distance from the star.
The Longshot environment, however, is a hostile one. Longshot is a
red supergiant star orbited by two gas supergiant planets. The
resultant radiation in the system makes our location an extremely
dangerous one. Even with full shields, Coronado will only survive
in the system for a few hours, and Masada is even more endangered,
lacking shields at all. The biological hull of the Pfhor cruiser
crisps and flakes under the continued assault. Lora Kor orders the
Defender ships clear of the Pfhor cruiser so that the latter ship
can fall further back from the star.
Meanwhile, the Jjaro energy signature is isolated to the inner gas
supergiant planet. This will be an extremely difficult planet to
approach due to the radiation environment, but we do get a clue as
to what we're looking for during the solar flare eruption. Those
watching the sensors observe a "hole" in the flare, possibly a
cloaked or partially nested object close to the inner gas giant...

Shadow came out of nowhere to become one of Coronado's most
professional and dedicated officers, and an outstanding
role-player. He much deserves this promotion and I look
