"You've got to be kidding me!" Stuart Morgan said.

"'fraid not, skipper. We're carrying 38 metric tons of this stuff,"
Master Chief William Haggerty said, squatting down to examine one of
the boxes. Pulling a small tool from his belt, he sliced open the
seals on the box and opened it, revealing two or three dozen Reorsan
winter pears. He pulled one out and tossed it up to the Captain of
 U.S.S. Renegade, who caught it.

The two men were standing in the aft corridor of saucer module 4,
deck 6, near Sickbay. The corridor, like many aboard Renegade, was
stacked high along the left hand side with crates and boxes.
Renegade's corridors weren't broad to begin with, and the crates and
boxes made them almost claustraphobic. Morgan, tall, thin and wiry,
didn't have much trouble navigating the constricted corridors.
Haggerty, taller and meaty, looked like he should have had more
trouble, but he didn't. Haggerty didn't brag -- he didn't have to
-- but he was an ninth generation sailor. He could have climbed
rigging or trimmed sail if Renegade had had any.

Morgan smirked at the pear. "Master Chief, remind me to tell the
old man that it's nice to have fresh fruit instead of replicated,
but this is a bit much," he said. "I feel like were a 20th century
submarine going out on patrol." He tossed the pear back to
Renegade's Command Master Chief, who slipped it back into the box
 and reestablished the seal.

Standing, Haggerty nodded, but didn't relent. "Skipper, lot of
m'boys say that we're evacuating... Garcia over on Odyssey says
they've got 80 tons of this stuff aboard 'er, and apparently
MacArthur and Gryphon are carrying even more," he said. Haggerty
slipped the tool he'd used back into his belt and gave Renegade's
Captain a direct look. Master Chiefs, even senior ones, did not
question Starfleet Captains. Not overtly, anyway.

However, only a fool would have ignored a look like that from
Renegade's most senior enlisted man, and Morgan was no fool.

Morgan spread his hands. "Master Chief, I don't know anything about
that," he said. "All I know is that Renegade and a couple of other
ships are going behind the lines for a while and it'll be a month or
two before we get back." Morgan smiled, feral. "You can tell
'your boys' that Renegade isn't coming back without drawing a
little Pfhor blood. The fruit will get eaten, and in a couple of
months, we'll probably wish we'd taken aboard more."

Haggerty nodded. "I'll tell 'em, skipper," he said, "but not even
Renegade can outrun rumor. If we are evacuating Reorsa, best the
crew hears it from you than from the mill, know what I mean?"
Haggerty's directness made him a good Command Master Chief, but like
many in the post, he considered the ship's enlisted personnel as his
 responsibility, not the Captain's.

Renegade's skipper considered this for a moment, then nodded.
"That's a good point, Master Chief. I'll keep it in mind," he said
 finally.

Haggerty claimed his small victory and left Morgan to his thoughts.
