 Notes from the Captain:

All in all, a pretty straightforward little sim. :) Nice job,
everyone! Fleet combat is generally my least favorite sim, which is
why I so rarely do them, but every once in a while, one is needed to
set the tone for what's going on. ;) Despite the escalating
conflict, that's our last one for a while. After this, we get back
to some of the more character-oriented stuff that you're all so good
at for a long while. I just wanted to make it clear to everyone that
there is indeed a war going on... just below the surface, if you will
permit me a small pun. ;)

For those of you who missed the announcements during the sim, there
were two. First, when "designing" the Apori, I had in my head a
little song by Yes called "Homeworld." You'll find it available for
 download at:

 http://www.jestertrek.com/music/

The song was originally written for a computer game... but doesn't
really fit that computer game. But the lyrics are so cryptic that I
found them really intriguing, so I decided to design a race in M64
around the lyrics to the song. ;) So, if you understand the lyrics
to this song, you've figured out the Apori. ::grins:: IC, the song
is one that becomes popular on Reorsa, written by a music group there
called Yes about their impressions of the Apori. ::snickers::

Second announcement: the long-promised "Story of M64 so far" page is
complete. You can find it at:

 http://www.jestertrek.com/m64/thestorysofar.html

Please let me know if you find any mistakes or problems.

 See you all next week!

Sim Title: "On This Rock", Part 3

 Teaser and Pre-Sim:
 -------------------
On Reorsa, Vice Admiral Aldur finishes his conversation with Iktakto
and analyzes some of it using the universal translator. One phrase
in particular has raised some eyebrows: the Apori apparently believe
that the Pfhor can "call down the aid of the One." According to
Iktakto, that is how they are generating the subspace bubble around
Pitstop. The problem: our current translation for the Apori phrase
"the One" is "God." Does this mean that the Apori believe that God
is on the Pfhor's side? Aldur and Fleet Captain Narque attempt to
unravel the mystery by looking more closely at the translation.

 During the Sim:
 ---------------
After a brief respite, Coronado and the other Starfleet vessels
involved in the second defense of the Pitstop system gathered near
the planet itself to regroup. The Captain ordered Kelaka and those
aboard back to Coro during the break and the gig soon departed from
U.S.S. Gryphon, which had recovered him. The Pfhor also regrouped,
apparently evacuating their two most-damaged ships before gathering
into five large strike forces and beginning a new advance. The Apori
moved up to block this advance, as did several of the Starfleet
ships. Odyssey and Gryphon, in particular, led their respective
attacks due to their false matter shielding.

Even so, the sheer number of Pfhor warships was daunting: fully 40 of
the monstrous ships were involved and their weight in numbers soon
began to force the allied ships back. Lora Kor suggested to the
allies that instead of trying to destroy the Pfhor ships directly,
finding and destroying the Pfhor means of generating the subspace
bubble would be just as effective. Without the bubble, the Pfhor
ships involved in the fight would be forced to real space, where the
formidble Apori "sunray" defenses would make short work of them. The
allied ships involved agreed, and the Captain put together a team to
 address this problem.

In the meantime, the Starfleet and Apori ships needed to give this
team time to work out a solution. That involved confronting the
Pfhor ships and trying to keep them away from the planet. The Apori
lost a great number of ships in this defense, moreso when the Pfhor
reached one of the Apori "starfish" ships. These large ships had not
been involved in the actual battle, and we soon learned why: they
were generating the fields that allowed the Apori ships to find and
counter the Pfhor's attack through subspace. Without the starfish,
only the allied ships themselves capable of nesting would be able to
find and target the Pfhor destroyers. We have only one ship with
this capability -- U.S.S. Vanguard -- so it was critical that we
protect the "starfish." The allied defense turned to this problem in
force, but the Pfhor attack proved overwhelming. Two starfish were
soon destroyed, and a third endangered. Each time a starfish was
destroyed, the resulting disruption in subspace caused both damage
and injuries to the allied ships as they were rocked by the
instability caused in the subspace medium.

The third starfish seemed lost when the Captain's team, working
together, were able to locate both the subspace layer the Pfhor
battleship was operating from and the point on its hull from which
their subspace bubble was being generated. Two false matter
torpedoes were modified to target this area, and launched by
Commander Drexler from the Bridge. The strike was successful: when
the Pfhor battleship was hit, the Pfhor ships vanished from the
bubble, presumably reemerging into real space. There, the Apori were
able to deal with them, though we were unable to observe this
directly since those in the bubble couldn't see what was happening
in real space and vice versa.

The Apori collapsed their own subspace bubbles once the threat was
eliminated and the Starfleet vessels regrouped in Pitstop 3 orbit.

 U.S.S. Coronado Complement Changes:
Lieutenant (JG) Ananda Wilk, returned from Extended LOA.
2nd Lieutenant Andrew Stylus, temporarily returned from LOA.

 Promotions:
Jacob Prescot, from 1st Lieutenant to Marine Captain
Last promotion date: 12-Nov-01, 16 sims
From his simming to his frequent logs to his frequent
"after-simming," Shadow has done an outstanding job of
developing the Jacob Prescot character. He is quickly
turning into one of Coro's core role-players. Well done!

 Recognitions:
Starfleet Service Ribbon (with Silver Comet Cluster)
       Commander Zunite Oswald
For service of, at a minimum, 100 weeks aboard a Starfleet
vessel plus numerous other contributions to U.S.S. Coronado.

 Academy Completions:
    1st Lieutenant Craig Serrold
       Starfleet Academy Helm Course (96%)
Well done on completing this course with such a high score!

Exchange of the Week: Gotta love those wolf-pack tactics...
<CoroLCARS> =.\ction= Odyssey takes the destroyer's initial attack in
stride and closes to near point-blank range. It's a little more
ponderous variation on Coro's "toss" technique for false matter
 torpedoes.
<LCTC_Drexler> Firing forward one. Two. ::fires forward torpedoes::
<CoroLCARS> =.\ction= Coronado fires a torpedo spread, taking a bite
out of the target's starboard side!
<[1LWL_Serrold]> TB1> ::drops back in on top of the Pfhor near Coro::
Yippee ki ay, mother - ::fires torpedoes::
<CoroLCARS> =.\ction= The Thunderbirds lock into a tight formation,
firing gatling bursts, just missing the target.
<L1CC_Prescot> ::eyes race over the display in front of him...
seeing the fighters maintaining their distance close to home::
<[1LWL_Serrold]> TB1> ::grunts and again fires torpedoes::
<CoroLCARS> =.\ction= The Thunderbirds lock into a tight formation,
firing gatling bursts, cutting into the target.
<COMC_Ironside> Load tube two. Ms. Wilk, bring aft launcher to bear
 on thos strike craft again.
<[1LWL_Serrold]> TB1> ::clenches his fist and smirks:: Hell yeah!
<CoroLCARS> =.\ction= Odyssey adds her own false matter torpedo to
the mix and all three hit the destroyer and begin to burrow. The
strike craft behind Coro split up, racing on either side of the
destroyer, then regroup on the other side.
 .
. A couple of minutes for the torpedoes to burrow, then...
 .
<CoroLCARS> =.\ction= The destroyer begins to break up from the
buried detonations. It's not cataclysmic, but it's bad enough. That
particular destroyer is out of the fight.
