Specialist Andaré Tarsis looked up from his board on Homeworld
Starbase. Behind him, one of the speakers softly played a bit of
music. It was coming up on day watch, but the night watch that he
was part of was a little more informal than was the norm at other
times. The board had fed him the signature of a Federation starship
inbound to Reorsa at high warp, and he looked up to watch the
outwarp. Sure enough, space bent around the predicted point, then
snapped back as a subspace bubble collapsed and the starship dropped
to impulse. The starship's four nacelles and rakish shape allowed
Tarsis to identify the warship almost instantly; he didn't even
bother looking at the ID codes.
"U.S.S. Fearless inbound, 0435 hours," he said, making an identical
notation in the log. Looking up again, his sharp eyes picked up a
bit of buckling near the upper portside nacelle. "Looks like she's
been in a fight," he added.
Lieutenant Shaded-by-Tree's voice through its voder was amused.
"You have misidentified this ship, Andaré. It is not like you.
Fearless is on patrol well west of here and is not due back for at
least a tenday," the braid officer said.
Tarsis raised one eyebrow and muttered "What? We have ten
Prometheus class warships flying around now?" under his breath.
Instead of making an issue of it however, Tarsis obliged the braid
by magnifying the viewer. The four nacelles and the familiar
Prometheus shape grew in the display, becoming unmistakable.
Tarsis was about to point this out when he noticed the ship's
registry... NCC-63549-A. He frowned. That couldn't be right. He
couldn't remember Fearless' registry off the top of his head, but he
was sure it started with a 5... he then started noticing other
inconsistencies. Two of the nacelles were a bit larger than
Fearless' and the mass information on the board was very different
than what he remembered. Only then did Tarsis bother looking at the
ID codes. They turned out to be an impossibility.

"It turns out the Boratis have a sense of humor," Fleet Captain
Rel'ao Narque said, entering Vice Admiral Brian Aldur's office. He
did this without knocking or otherwise announcing his presence.
Narque and Aldur had known each other for a long time, and were long
past such formalities. "By the way, good morning," Narque added,
remembering.
"Good morning, yourself. And how so?" Aldur said, looking up from
the terminal on his desk and leaning back in his chair a bit to
regard the Rigellian officer.
"They've been in contact with U.S.S. Anderson for at least a week
now, and never bothered to let them know that there were a dozen
other Starfleet vessels just outside communications range until
*after* they'd signed a technology-sharing agreement with that
ship's Captain," Narque said. Aldur snorted. It was just like the
Boratis to do something like that. They were too sneaky by half.
He indicated that Narque should continue.
Narque nodded. "In any case, Anderson is finally en route. I've
dispatched U.S.S. Vanguard with orders signed by yourself--" Narque
gave Aldur a somewhat irreverant grin; the Boratis weren't the only
ones with a sense of humor. "--indicating that they should
intercept Anderson and escort her in. Anderson's slipstream drive
was destroyed at some point."
Aldur nodded. "Lt. Commander Owens is convinced that he has a
workable slipstream core, built from Reorsan materials, ready for
testing. He's just been looking for a ship to test it on. I'd say
Anderson's elected if her Captain is willing. With Thunderchild's
arrival this morning, this is turning out to be a pretty profitable
week."
Narque chuckled. "I'll make a note that we should ask for more
reinforcements from Starfleet as soon as they can send them," he
said, grinning.
Aldur gave his former Science officer a wry smile. "You do that,
Fleet Captain. Thank you for the information on Anderson," he said.
Narque nodded and took his leave of the Vice Admiral.
