Notes from the Captain:
I think we can officially say the summer doldrums are upon us. ;)
That was the lightest-attended sim that I can recall in some time.
We didn't even have any observers to fill in the channel. ;)
Remember, I don't mind absenses as long as you let me know about
them (preferably in advance). That allows me to tailor the action
to the simmers that DO show.
Thank you to everyone who WAS there to put up with my slightly
experimental sim. It's definitely harder to do lighter stuff than
it is to do darker. ::chuckles::

Sim Title: "Swordplay", Part 3
Teaser and Pre-Sim:

Vice Admiral Aldur and Lt. Commander Jim Owens meet with Jia Ron
Drull, our Taeren representative. Drull has brought Aldur a
prototype "ansible": a device that allows instantaneous
communications over long distances. Though Drull assures Aldur and
Owens that it will work, he is unwilling or unable to explain
exactly how it works. Aldur then dismisses Owens and demands more
direct cooperation from the Taer. Drull reluctantly agrees to
provide information about space in a wide radius around Reorsa.
During the Sim:
---------------
Serrold was captured by the locals, who assume that he is a demon
because he "fell from the sky." Meanwhile, the legitimate away team
on the planet struggles to reach his position, Daren's team in the
damaged Kelaka, Ironside's team on the ground. Daren struggled with
the damaged gig, and was eventually forced to return to Coro. The
Exec immediately drafted a team to return to the surface and rescue
the team there. Meanwhile, the Captain, Lt. Commander Ma'Aru, and
Caring-Thoughts worked to determine if the planet was real or some
kind of elaborate deception of hallucination.
Meanwhile, Savant does what she can to comfort the critically
injured Captain Serrold while Ironside approaches in the guise of a
local farmer whose crop was destroyed by "these scoundrels."
Savant's immunity to physical weapons soon has her in the "demon"
category with Serrold. The latter, however, is miraculously cured
by one of the locals, a man wearing dark robes who somehow manages
to regenerate Serrold's hand and arm without the use of any
technology whatsoever. Savant halts her resistance to the guards,
intent on doing what she could for Serrold.
The Captain of this particular troop of guards seemed inclined to
believe Ironside's story, especially when the latter helped the
guards defeat a sudden assault by Hunters and Hounds that attacked
the group. As Daren's newly-arrived shuttlecraft arrived overhead,
they could only watch helplessly as Ironside and the others were led
back toward a nearby encampment. However, at least this time, the
Captain of the guards seemed fairly friendly toward Ironside and
Marcy.
At least until Marcy and Serrold used a distraction caused by the
shuttlecraft to attack the guards. The guards were initially
surprised, but soon gained the upper hand immobilizing Marcy and
Serrold. One of the guards also found Savant's weakness: he used
her concern for Serrold and threatened the Marine with a dagger if
Savant did not stand down. She eventually did. The attack,
however, seemed to destroy what trust Ironside had built up with the
guard Captain. The Captain read Ironside's expressions to mean that
both Marcy and Serrold were part of Ironside's command.
However, ironically, the guard Captain, apparently familiar with
being disappointed by the actions of men under his command,
sympathized with Ironside's plight and offered to let the entire
group go... if they left the area immediately. Ironside readily
agreed, and the group quickly headed for the landed shuttlecraft for
the return trip to Coronado. Fortunately, the team returned before
the Captain, convinced that the planet is an illusion, was about to
order Ma'Aru and Caring-Thoughts to attempt a dangerous procedure to
disrupt the illusion. On the shuttle, meanwhile, an outraged
Ironside informed Captain Serrold that he was to be immediately
restricted from duty, and possibly turned over for a court-martial.
