 Notes from the Captain:

Hello from Colorado (sort of; I'm on my way, anyway!). Because this
is my moving week, this week's sim report is likely to be a little
bit abbreviated, contain obvious errors, or both. ;) Sorry for any
inconvenience this may cause, but this is being written on the run...

 See you all next week!

 Sim Title: "Swordplay", Part 1

 Teaser and Pre-Sim:
 -------------------
In the future, Joe Fisher continues to tell his extended family of
the future history of the people and events of the M64 Galaxy
(foreshadowing: a valid literary technique). The story of future
events takes a humorous turn when one of Fisher's daughters teases
him with the knowledge that his Patrol Craft actually left the Reor
system during the battle. Fisher responds that his craft was
following a flight of Pfhor strike craft when they encountered
 something unusual...

 During the Sim:
 ---------------
The aftermath of the Defense of Reorsa continues. Even ten days
later, the allies are picking up the pieces of the battle, which
include at least two destroyed Federation starships: U.S.S. Stirling
and U.S.S. Athena. Pieces of the former, the Task Group 5.4 command
ship, are still being tractored back to Reorsa orbit while other
ships, including Coronado, sweep the system free of the larger debris
that could be a hazard to navigation. Coronado is then ordered to
investigate a tangent from the main battle: a Reorsan patrol craft
on the edge of the Quaatis Nebula has discovered a planet... a planet
that formed right in front of them!

The formation of the planet has damaged the PC, and as a result, Coro
has also been asked to rendezvous with the ship and rescue the crew.
As a result, the Captain orders the frigate to the nebula perimeter
at slipstream, followed by impulse power once we're within its folds.
The nebula blocks or overloads even our LORASON sensors and as a
result, it takes us quite a while to locate the patrol craft. Once
we locate it, the rescue is complicated by the fact that transporters
are nearly useless within the nebula; we only manage to recover one-
third of the PC's crew that way. Lieutenant Wilk and Commander
Ma'Aru therefore take Kelaka over to the badly crippled patrol craft.

Meanwhile, the Captain, Colonel Ironside, and Savant consider the
matter of the planet that appeared before the patrol craft's crew.
A search of the records indicates that the planet's signature matches
another world Coronado has visited: the Thistledown, which is also
located within the folds of a nebula. The one problem: the
Thistledown is over 19 million light-years away, in the Milky Way.
While Savant believes that some sort of gateway has caused the planet
to appear in M64, the Captain is much more skeptical, pointing out
that while the Taer or another M64 race may want us to believe that
this planet is the Thistledown, but it might not really be so.
However, the Captain can point to no reason that anyone would wish to
deceive us in this manner, and is willing to reserve judgement until
we can actually examine the planet.

We do have two pieces of rather compelling evidence: first, the
nebula in the region of the planet appears to affect Coronado's
systems identically to the way the Thistledown did: sensors and
transporters are difficult or impossible to use, as are systems that
rely on subspace circuitry, particularly our computers and
communications. These are all effects consistent with the behavior
of our equipment near the Thistledown. Second, a souvenier of the
Thistledown which Commander Oswald kept in her quarters suddenly
appears to reactivate, setting her quarters on fire and destroying
another set before a very pragmatic order from the Captain places the
device outside the ship. The object then seems to be drawn in the
direction that the patrol craft came from...

This is delayed by difficulties with the rescue of the patrol craft's
crew. The majority board Kelaka without incident once the gig docks,
but the PC's engineering systems are quite fragile, and at least two
crew members have remained there to hold the craft together. Another
of the PC's crew returns to the ship to rescue the two men, but the
three fail to return to Kelaka before the craft's structural
integrity fails catastrophically, destroying the ship and nearly
destroying Kelaka and Lieutenant Wilk in the process. Fortunately,
Kelaka was built to sustain such insulting treatment, and comes out
of the mishap little worse for wear, though the same might not be
 said for the Lieutenant...
