Coronado had been in orbit for almost a day, but her Captain still hadn't
gone back aboard. He'd been barred from it, in fact. Commander Daren
seemed a bit upset with himself that he couldn't return Coro in perfect
condition and was therefore seeing to the ship's repairs before returning
command. All in all, Lora Kor thought his Exec had little or nothing to
beat himself up over... but he had made a couple of mistakes during the
escort mission, and those mistakes had cost several members of Coronado's
crew their lives. The Captain therefore allowed Daren his atonement, in
whatever form he preferred... and made a mental note to keep an eye on the
XO over the next few days.
So, instead of returning to Coro, Lora Kor spent the time in the situation
room below the Reorsan Ministry of Defense. Originally, he'd been asked to
help evaluate the holographic upgrades that were going on in the space.
Until very recently, there hadn't been a single hologram generator on the
planet, but now they were springing up everywhere and being put to a variety
of uses. The project had seemed to be a perfect fit for Savant and Drexler,
so he'd towed them along to assist. Within a few minutes of their arrival,
however, Savant had been dragged into an extended technical conversation
regarding some extremely complex aspect of holographic projection. Drexler
soon found himself engaged in a discussion with the techs of Coronado's
LORASON capabilities, which were being piped into the room. That left Lora
Kor to his own devices, and he was... playing, honestly. He spent the time
letting his virtual eye roam over the whole island that was home to the
humanoid settlements on Reorsa.
He finally settled on the skeleton of starship Destiny, which had been towed
out of the Vehicle Assembly Building of the Fisher's Landing spaceport and
was resting on one of the launch platforms nearby. Calling it a skeleton
was accurate enough: all that had been completed was the framing of the
ship, the main power systems, much of the warp core framing, and the impulse
engines. The leading edge of the ship had been draped with carbon-carbon
armor, and a control room had been installed where Destiny's auxiliary
bridge would one day be constructed. Then fuel for the impulse reactors had
been piped in. However, no more work could be done on the skeleton on the
ground. She had to be launched into space before a warp core could be
installed to provide power for the next phase of construction. Lora Kor
could almost imagine Oswald down there somewhere, giving orders like an
Empress. He grinned at the thought, distracted.
He therefore didn't realize that Vice Admiral Aldur was standing over his
shoulder until Aldur spoke.
"I understand she's ready for launch," the Admiral said, then half-smiled as
Lora Kor started. It was unusual to catch the Trill Captain unawares.
Lora Kor looked over his shoulder and nodded, chuckling. "Sorry, Admiral,
you startled me. And yes, she is. More than 90,000 metric tons worth of
her, counting the impulse reactants and the supplemental boosters," he said.
Aldur nodded, settling into a chair nearby. "Have you looked over the
launch plan?" Aldur asked. Lora Kor's experience in starship and small
craft design and construction was no secret among the officers of the task
group.
"Yes, sir," Lora Kor said. "The plan is simple enough. A series of
graviton emitters and subspace field coils has been inserted throughout the
skeleton. When powered, those will artificially lower the mass of the
skeleton, in much the same way the full size assemblies do on larger
starships," he said. Aldur nodded, so Lora Kor continued. "Once the mass
has been lowered sufficiently, we'll ignite a pair of supplemental impulse
boosters and the main impulse engines. That will provide the initial kick
to get the skeleton off the ground and get her on her way. Once the
supplemental boosters have exhausted their fuel, Destiny can cut them loose
to fall into the sea, and the remaining reactants should be enough to power
her internal impulse engines and get her out of the atmosphere in a
ballistic trajectory. Coronado is standing by to catch her in a tractor
beam and tow her to Onyx."
Aldur looked a bit troubled. "There's several places where things can go
wrong in that plan, particularly if Coronado isn't there to catch Destiny,"
he said.
Lora Kor nodded, serene. "Yes, Admiral, but even if the worst happens,
Destiny will be on that ballistic trajectory for 20 or 25 minutes. That's
plenty of time for one of the the other ships in-system to assist. And
there are two ships nearby with the Apori transporter upgrades, plus the
spaceport itself, of course. The crew won't be in any danger regardless."
The Admiral didn't look entirely convinced, but he let it go, preparing to
move on, then appeared to think of something. "I thought Colonel Ironside
returned with Coro and MacArthur?" he asked. "I was hoping to talk with him
about the organization of the troops in the Meyer system."
Lora Kor indicated the map of the island. "He did, Admiral, but then the
Hunters started an attack on Andalee on the south tip of the island. The
Colonel decided to repulse the attack himself, with a couple of battalions
from MacArthur."
Aldur nodded. "How's it going?" he asked.
"Well," Lora Kor said, "he hasn't reported in yet, but..." Lora Kor's
expression became very bland as he responded, but his voice was light. "I
expect things are going his way. There have been lots of things going on
there that I associate with the Colonel -- bright lights in the sky...
explosions... that sort of thing."
Aldur almost laughed, but controlled it in time. "Yes," he said instead,
eyes twinkling, "the Colonel CAN get a bit ostentatious when annoyed, can't
he?" He paused, standing up. "You're returning to Coro to handle catching
Destiny?" he asked. Lora Kor nodded. "Very well," Aldur said. "Keep me
informed."
