Notes from the Captain:
Sorry for the long sim summary this week. Those of you who were
there knew a lot happened. ;-)
We're moving into what is my least favorite time: the summer months
leading to what is normally the late July / early August attendance
slump on Coro. While I understand it's perfectly natural and
acceptable to miss sims (horrors!), I do ask that you let me know in
advance when you can't make it. This allows me to tailor the sim to
the people who will be there. If you can't let me know beforehand,
then letting me know afterwards is fine too. Just don't go
incommunicado. ;-)
Next week begins Coronado episode #100! In honor of the occasion,
we're going to forget about the war for a while and do something a
bit lighter in tone. ::grins:: Feel free to relax a bit. If
nothing else, your characters probably need the break...
See you all next week!
Sim Title: "Despair and Defiance", Part 3
Teaser and Pre-Sim:
-------------------
Vice Admiral Aldur is contacted by a Pfhor Grand Admiral, who
essentially demands the surrender of the allies. Aldur attempts to
keep his temper as the Grand Admiral explains that the Hegemony's
will cannot be denied any longer and that if need be, the Pfhor will
destroy every pocket of allied resistance. Aldur responds that the
decision is in the hands of the Reorsan civilian government. The
Grand Admiral, amused, says that he understands this. At this
point, the Camelynians decide they've had enough and attack.
During the Sim:
---------------
Coronado races toward the Reor system, as the Captain is determined
to stand or fall with the rest of our people. Just before our
arrival in the system, Engineering managed to get our primary
computers and holographic displays back on-line, though LORASON is
still disabled at present. Upon our arrival in the Reor system, we
find that the Pfhor battleship is still present, but has been
damaged somehow; part of it is on fire. We also find a swarm of
other Pfhor ships, as well as a smaller number of allied ships
attempting to hold them off. Finally, we received a distress call
from Churchill Downs itself -- apparently, a number of Hunters had
reached the surface and was attacking the city.
The Captain decided that realistically, we could not do very much
about the battleship. We lack the firepower to even damage the
gargantuan vessel and without false matter shields, Coronado would
be an easy target; though we are manuverable enough to avoid most
Pfhor primary weapons, all it would take is one hit to cripple or
destroy us. Lora Kor therefore decided we could be most useful in
repulsing the assault on Churchill Downs. He therefore ordered
Coronado into planetary orbit, where Colonel Ironside personally
lead Coro's entire Battallion to the surface.
While Coro was beaming her Marines to the surface, the frigate could
not maneuver tactically and was in essence pinned in orbit. That
made us a much easier target for Pfhor strike craft and the
destroyers in the system. While we were able to hold our own
against the destroyers, several allied ships, including Blackrazor
and what was apparently the operable skeleton of Reorsan starship
Avenger, did what they could to keep the strike craft from swarming
us. Commander Tlaloco also took the opportunity to conduct a brief
but extremely dangerous spacewalk to solidify the fragile repairs to
our LORASON sensors.
As Coronado kept herself busy with these missions and the Marines
began pushing the Hunters away from the central portions of
Churchill Downs, other allied ships, including U.S.S. Vanguard,
continued to attack the Pfhor battleship. Unfortunately, there were
unable to inflict very much damage on the ship despite the
Camelynian's use of their subspace weaponry. The latter, in fact,
had a tendency to damage allied ships even more the Pfhor ships.
Once our Marines were deployed, the Captain decided to gamble that
one of Savant's modified false matter torpedoes might be able to do
some damage to the juggernaut and so Coro slipped in as close as we
dared.
Savant's modification to the torpedoes increases the sensitivity of
the seeker head to energy sources and thereby makes it more likely
that the torpedo will burrow into one before detonating. We
launched the torpedo toward the battleship, which apparently
warranted a "personal call" from the ship's commander. Among other
things, the Pfhor commander told us that "what the Watchers can
make, the Watchers can also unmake"... whatever that means.
However, when the false matter torpedo struck the battleship,
instead of burrowing, it bounced off. Commander Drexler determined
that the false matter projector aboard the torpedo failed somehow
and managed to remotely bring it back on-line.
We didn't get a chance for a second shot, however: Vice Admiral
Aldur instructed all allied ships to stand down. To the disbelief
of many, he announced that he and the Pfhor commander had reached an
agreement for a 30-day cease-fire for the Reorsan civilian
government to "consider" the Pfhor's offer to join the Hegemony. On
the surface, Aldur made it apparent that it was his intention to buy
time for us to make some decisions, but in space we are left with
more questions than answers: is this a surrender? And if not, why
did our false matter torpedo not find its target?
