Notes from the Captain:
Great sim, everyone! As I'm sure I'll say many times over the
course of this summer, please let me know if you can't make a sim,
in advance if at all possible! I realize that summer is a busy time
for people, but please keep me filled in so that I can tailor the
Coro sims to the simmers that will be attending. Thanks! :)
During the months of July and August, anyone who writes a written
e-mail log will receive double promotion credit (two points instead
of one) for that log. Partially, this is to encourage the rather
slow log count we've had lately, partially it's to offset the fact
that a lot of the sims between now and the end of August will be of
a more action-oriented bent without a lot of time for character
development. So, get out there and write some logs! ;)

Sim Title: "Mutually Assured Survival", Part 2
Teaser and Pre-Sim:

Colonel Ironside discusses the difficulties of working with
incomplete information with Major Stephen Gregg, Coronado's
Battalion CO. Both agree that working with complete information
would be better, but also acknowledge that what one doesn't know,
one can't reveal if he or she is captured. Gregg, however,
expresses surprise that the Colonel at least was not briefed on why
this particular target was chosen. The two men also discuss a
uniform pin being worn by many Starfleet officers meant to signify
that these officers consider Reorsa and Meyer parts of the
Federation in absentia, and that their oaths to defend the
Federation extend to these planets.
During the Sim:
---------------
Coronado is far to the "west" of Reorsa now, deep within Pfhor
space, though our exact location is classified to most of the crew.
Our mission is to attack and destroy a Pfhor supply depot on a
planet code-named "Pearce" along with U.S.S. Churchill and U.S.S.
Renegade. Since the depot is buried deep underground on this world,
we are obligated to transport Marines to the complex. Once there,
the Marines will clear an area of Hegemony troops, then plant and
detonate a large explosive. Commodore Lora Kor has ordered that
"none be allowed to escape, and let no stone stand on any other," a
rather brutal level of destruction uncharacteristic of him.
The mission proceeds in almost straight-forward fashion. Our
intelligence about the system is correct: it is only lightly
defended by Pfhor strike craft, with none of the capital ships
present. Our reconaissance becomes particularly good when Coro's
systems are linked to "Kami Seya," a Taer projection of a starship
monitoring the system. Between this and the ansible aboard, this
allows Coronado to stay in complete real-time sensor contact with
the system even while at slipstream. This remarkable level of
intelligence allows the small task group the first strike against
the defending strike craft, which fall quickly. Marines then begin
beaming down.
Right behind them could be the real purpose for the mission: an
intelligence team gathered by Lt. Commanders Drexler and Ma'Aru, on
the Commodore's orders, take a team to the complex in an attempt to
capture one of the cylindrical lifeforms. This is the member
species of the Hegemony that paradoxically, we know both the most
and the least about. We know, however, that they are a key species:
they are the center of both the Pfhor strike craft and the
biosoftware virus that periodically attacks allied ships.
By capturing one, we hope to gain vital intelligence about the
Hegemony. Both missions are quickly successful: the intel team
returns to Coro with not one but two of the cylindrical lifeforms,
and the Marines plant the explosives with little difficulty. Pfhor
destroyers begin appearing in the system just as the teams are
returning to Coro. It is at that point that the mission turns
unusual.
Just before returning to Coro, Colonel Ironside discovers a new
Hegemony species deep within the complex, one that the cylindrical
lifeforms are strenuously defending. A cross between a Borg and
something out of a nightmare, Ironside only gets a look before
returning to the ship. Meanwhile, even with everyone back aboard,
Commodore Lora Kor steadfastly refuses to allow Coronado or the
other two ships to leave the system, ordering all vessels to evade
the attacks by the destroyers as best they can... The whole point
to a hit-and-run raid is to *run* after it is completed to deny the
enemy an effective counter-attack. So why won't the Commodore let
us run?
