Notes from the Captain:
Again, happy Canada Day for our more northern simmers, and happy
Independence Day for myself and the Americans! I hope everyone had
a safe and enjoyable holiday. I know I am. ;)
As stated in sim, this episode is the first of a "twelve-parter."
The plots and subplots will be more intertwined than is normal even
for Coro. ;) Episode beginnings and ends will be in more of a "to
be continued" vein than actual episode endings. Finally, the
teasers will generally be used to present how the storyline is
affecting other ships, those behind the lines, or people not
normally seen in the actual Coro sim.
During this period, anyone who writes a written e-mail log will
receive double promotion credit (two points instead of one) for that
log. Partially, this is to encourage the rather slow log count
we've had lately, partially it's to offset the fact that a lot of
the sims between now and the end of August will be of a more action-
oriented bent without a lot of time for character development. So,
get out there and write some logs! ;)
See you all next week!
Sim Title: "Mutually Assured Survival", Part 1
Teaser and Pre-Sim:
-------------------
An argument breaks out among the Starfleet Commanding Officers in
M64 when Vice Admiral Aldur reveals that the Reorsan civilian
government will be agreeing to join the Pfhor Hegemony. Many of the
COs see this as unnecessary surrender and are concerned that it will
turn the planet's population into Pfhor slaves. Others realize that
the Peace First demonstrations are little more than a ruse staged
for the Pfhor's benefit and see the plan as an admirable way to
safeguard the planet's civilian population. Aldur lays down the
bare facts: without such a ruse, the allied ships are simply not
strong enough to directly defend the Reor system...
During the Sim:
---------------
Coronado is far to the "west" of Reorsa now, deep within Pfhor
space, though our exact location is classified to most of the crew.
While we wait, a number of shuttles and packets come in from other
Defenders ships, either transferring final crew replacements to Coro
or joining her for an upcoming mission. Even the mission is
initially classified, though once all of the ships involved arrive,
Captain Daren begins briefing the senior staff on the specifics:
Coronado, Renegade, and Churchill are behind Pfhor lines to destroy
a Pfhor underground supply depot.
The mission will involve the two Marine frigates slipping in close
to the depot and beaming down their battalions while two squadrons
of Wraiths and U.S.S. Churchill defend the frigates. Defenses
around the depot are expected to be light -- the target has been
selected after close observation by the Taer over a period of
several days. Though Pfhor warships will be stationed close by, it
is expected that the three starships will have enough time to enter
the system, destroy the depot, and hastily depart: the mission is
essentially a hit-and-run raid.
While preparations begin aboard Coronado for this mission, Commodore
Lora Kor briefs the Task Group staff on another aspect of the
mission: Savant and Drexler are to gather a special strike team to
accompany the Marines to the surface. There, the two officers and
their team will attempt to identify and capture one of the
"cylindrical" lifeforms that are also known to be the biosoftware
virus in another form. Savant is given the mission to determine how
one would safely capture a lifeform that can and will self-destruct
when killed or captured. If this part of the mission is successful,
it will give us an obvious insight into this Pfhor Hegemony member
species, their technology, and motivations.
Precise timing will be crucial to the success of the mission. Vice
Admiral Aldur expects the destruction of the depot to send a
"message" to the Pfhor. Though the Defenders are exiled from Reor,
our job is to prove to the Pfhor that even targets well within their
space are potential targets of reprisals or raids. How the Admiral
intends to send this message or what the greater meaning of it is,
however, he is keeping to himself for the moment.
Preparations are briefly interrupted when Lieutenant Vogel and
Alados's shuttle is attacked by a roving patrol of Pfhor strike
craft. The shuttle quickly proves no match at all for the nimble
Pfhor craft and is in danger of destruction, requiring that Coro
herself intervene to rescue the crew. Vogel and Alados are safely
recovered, as are two replacement cords they were bringing aboard
for Caring-Thoughts, our Reorsan liaison. However, Coronado's
position is revealed to the Hegemony in the confusion. The incident
prompts the Commodore to instruct Daren to keep a rotating patrol of
Spectres hot at all times to deal with such attacks, and forces the
small strike group to change locations to prevent a counterstrike by
the Hegemony. It is a lesson learned, fortunately at low cost.

<CPCO_Daren> RR> ::takes a seat behind the desk:: +taps+ Go Ahead,
Sir
<CMGC_LoraKor> Flag> +taps+ Captain, let's try to do... whatever it
is you did a bit more quietly next time. I suspect we've just
announced our presence to any Pfhor patrol within 10 light-years.
I'm going to need a change of position to alternate 1. Please see
to it that Renegade and Churchill are advised.
<CMGC_LoraKor> Flag> +taps+ Once we're there... ::chuckles:: I
suggest you put a CAP out to handle these little... unexpected
surprises more quietly.
<CPCO_Daren> +taps+ I'll have them informed at once, Sir. I'm
preparing a Senior Staff briefing on the 'assignment' presently...
<CMGC_LoraKor> Flag> +taps+ Very well, Captain. I'll expect
Coronado to be mission-ready on the specified schedule. Time waits
for no sentient.
<CPCO_Daren> RR> +taps+ Indeed Sir, Daren Out! ::steps back out
