Notes from the Captain:
Excellent job, everyone! I was particularly impressed about how everyone
picked a group, jumped right into that group's action, and was able to
keep track of where they were. As a result, you might not have been able
to keep very good track of what everyone else was up to. As a result, I
have included a pretty detailed sim summary so that you can catch up with
what everyone else was doing. ;)
Sort of a time-keeping note: you might have lost track of the IC date due
to several recent "time jumps." For reference, Dr. Ungtae's funeral was
on November 5, 2401. However, the three sims since the funeral have all
taken on a single day a few weeks later, in late November/early December.
The next sim on the 10th will take place a few days later -- call it a
month or so total after Ungtae's funeral. The sim on 17 December will put
us back more or less on "real time"... allowing for 400 years time
difference between here and M64, of course. ;) So, the best places to
put e-mail logs will be either during the Marine training, or between the
attack on Everon and what takes place a few days later.
Speaking of time jumps, the sim on 17 December will Coro's last sim of
2001! We'll have a two-week break so that all of us can enjoy our
holiday season; there will be NO Coro sims on Christmas Eve or New Year's
Eve for obvious reasons. Our first sim of 2002 will be on 7 January
2002... and will it will take place IC on 7 January 2402. ;-)
Remember, a very detailed map of the part of M64 Coro finds herself in is
available for your review at:
http://www.jestertrek.com/m64/
Coro's crew's current position is the Reor system, which you'll find in
Grid 004 next to the smaller of the two nebulae on the main map. Of
course, if you don't know where Reor is by now, you're probably not paying
any attention to the map... ;-) Coronado herself is under repair in the
Pitstop system in Grid 001, between Reor and Gateway.
Sim Title: "Trade Delegation", Part 2
Teaser and Pre-Sim:
-------------------
Coronado's command crew, along with two platoons of Marines, two tanks,
two wings of Spectres, and Major Wayne's Raptors squadron, were successful
in liberating Everon from a large group of Hunters and Hounds. As the
Marines moved north to secure the monorail station, cargo depot, and
commercial district, the Hunters were escaping down-river. Other Marine
groups were apparently having similar good luck in driving the Hunters out
of other settlements near Churchill Downs. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to us,
Jia Ron Drull is back, and was offering his services to Admirals Theron
and Aldur as a go-between between humanoids and the Apori, the spider-like
race that has settled in the Pitstop system. Unfortunately, we have had
no luck to date with meaningful long-term communications with this race,
so Aldur and Theron were inclined to accept the Taeren's help.
During the Sim:
---------------
As the Hunters retreated from Everon, the command crew broke up into
several teams to secure the settlement. Dr. Thompson continued to work
with those injured during the assault, primarily Commander Tlaloco, who
had both plasma burns from Hunter weapons and severe flash-burns,
complicating the injury to his eyes that he suffered when U.S.S. Coronado
was crippled. While Lieutenant Hammond looked on and kept Tlaloco calm
and centered, Thompson assigned most of the routine casualties to his
assistants and turned his full attention to Tlaloco. Though the bodily
damage was relatively simple -- most of it had been blocked by his armor
-- the further damage to his eyes and optic nerves was more dangerous. In
the end, the doctor was forced to proceed with a cornea/retina transplant
operation and worked on that over the course of the next hour. With human
transplants rare in the area and somewhat suspect, Tlaloco requested
something somewhat radical: that Thompson use transplanted Hunter corneas.
Tlaloco hoped to gain a further insight into our adversaries. When the
injured Ensign Wilk later arrived, Hammond turned her attention to her.
Meanwhile, Colonel Ironside's and Commander Daren's fire teams continued
into central and northern Everon to confirm the retreat of the Hunters.
Daren's team, ahead of Ironside's, headed for the cargo depot and monorail
station. Meanwhile, Ironside's team drew the central commercial district.
Ironside's team soon found survivors from the Everon settlers barricaded
into the basements of some of the buildings, but had to negotiate with
them to get them to emerge; they were apparently worried that the Marines'
presence might be a Hunter deception of some kind. Daren's team... wasn't
as lucky. The basement of the monorail station had been turned into a
slaughterhouse for fully half of the settlers. This area was being
guarded by several Hounds, and Daren's team was forced to deal with both
that and reinforcing the unstable building before they could proceed.
While the Marines and the Coro command team dealt with the situation on
the surface, the Wraiths and Spectres had been called into orbit to
intercept an emormous starship folding into the Reor system. Wayne soon
found himself involved in negotiations with an enigmatic race that
alternately called themselves the Ventu or the "Unbound." The Ventu
claimed to have entered the system to trade. Wayne initially found this
very hard to believe but relented when the Ventu showed no more hostility
than launching a few small fighters from their enormous ship. The problem
then became one very unfamiliar to the Marine: having to decide if the
very large amount of resources the Ventu were interested in -- either
heavy metals or hydrogen volatiles mined from the Pitstop system -- was
worth trading for a bit of unusual technology the Ventu were offering.
Captain Lora Kor, advised of the situation by Reorsan Fleet Command,
recruited Lieutenant Farley to fly him up to Wayne to assist.
While the Captain helped Wayne stall the negotiations, Commander Oswald
and Farley worked to understand the sample equations transmitted by the
Ventu. In addition, the Ventu had asked permission to debark a
"passenger" that their ship had been carrying, and the Captain gave
permission for this. The Ventu ship released a small bubble containing a
single lifeform, a nominally bipedal humanoid. The humanoid was extremely
tall, thin, but with quite pronounced musculature; while he? she? had eyes
and hair tied into a topknot, the lifeform had no discernable nose, ears,
or mouth. He also showed signs of having been in some kind of accident or
explosion. Most troubling of all, the lifeform looked very similar to,
though not exactly like, the birdlike foot-soldiers of the Pfhor Hegemony.
Once aboard Wraith 1, the Captain ordered the passenger confined until he
or she woke up from the stasis bubble the Ventu transported him in.
Unfortunately, Oswald and Farley were unable to provide much insight into
the Ventu sample equations. Both agreed that the equations defined some
sort of additional capability for our replicators, but neither could say
with any certainty what this new capability would allow us to replicate.
Oswald joked based on what she was reading that the equations seemed to
say that a replicator modified with the equations would replicate
something without really replicating it. Lora Kor finally decided in a
somewhat pragmatic way: in order to enlist the Ventu as possible allies,
he agreed to the sale. However, he ordered Oswald and Farley to determine
if he'd just been suckered by this galaxy's most impressive snake-oil
salesmen, a lá the Ferengi, or if he'd bought something of value.
