Notes from the Captain:

Like many Coronado part 1s, more setup this week than anything else, but
some very good character development and interaction in Engineering! As
we move into late winter and early spring, action sims are going to
become more and more prevalent, so get used to the quiet ones while you

Coronado is completing her final refit work in the Pitstop system, which
you'll find in Grid 001, between Reor and Gateway. Pitstop's another
system that you should be finding either instantly or not at all by now,
depending on how interested you are in the map. ;-)

Sim Title: "Manifest Destiny", Part 1

Teaser and Pre-Sim:

In the far future, Joe Fisher tells his grandchildren the story of the
launching of "Destiny." Meanwhile, in the present, Coronado prepares for
her own launching. However, it isn't likely to be smooth: Coro is still
infected with the biosoftware virus and the new false matter torpedoes
have yet to be completely tested...

During the Sim:
---------------
The crew of U.S.S. Coronado has recongregated in the Pitstop system and
begun final work to get Coro ready to leave dock. Unfortunately, this
process is somewhat complicated by a major problem: both the ship and
Savant are still infected by the Pfhor biosoftware virus. From what can
be determined, the virus entered through either the tactical or the
navigational systems and spread from there. Although not every ship's
system is infected, enough are to put Coronado at serious risk if we
encounter another Pfhor ship that can communicate with the virus lifeform.
Coro therefore must avoid Pfhor encounters for the moment. Our initial
orders are merely to escort Pearl and Crystal Palace to their new staging
area in the Artemis system. That will get them away from the periodic
attacks taking place in the Pitstop system.

Down in Engineering, a large contingent met to discuss the virus and how
to combat it. A number of very good theories are being thrown around,
but at the moment, theories is all they are. Anything the Engineering
crew does to try to eradicate the virus will presumably put the ship at
risk -- as a lifeform, the virus will try to defend itself. The team was
therefore looking for a way to isolate part of the ship as a testing
ground for their eventual solution. Savant was obviously very interested
in the progress in this area.

During our refit, some major changes to the ship were completed: the main
Bridge has been moved down to Deck 9, Section 1. Instead of being placed
at the top of the saucer as in traditional designs, this Bridge is buried
deep within Coronado's saucer section. This provides a couple of
advantages: first, the new Bridge is both larger and closely connected to
Coro's Command Information Center. That makes our frigate an ideal
platform for coordination of fleet combat, at need. The second
advantage is the fact that a deeply buried Bridge will be very difficult
for the Pfhor to target with their beam weapons. Much of the crew spent
some time on Deck 9 exploring the new complex and its capabilities.

As Colonel Ironside was examining his portion of the new Bridge, he was
also holding a discussion about the virus with a number of Coronado crew,
and has come up with an interesting theory. About six weeks prior to
Coro being speared, Ironside was badly injured when some kind of Pfhor
transmission hit the ship, his console in particular. Because Ironside's
injuries at the time were not life-threatening, we dismissed this
apparent attack at that time. However, in light of the new evidence
regarding the virus, Ironside speculated that perhaps this original
transmission was some sort of carrier wave for the virus. The Captain
thought this theory interesting enough to ask Doctor Thompson to conduct
new scans of the Marine, searching for corroboration. Thompson completed
these scans and had some grim news for Ironside: he apparently is indeed
being somehow affected by some analogue of the virus...

As Coro was being prepared for launch, the Pfhor launched an attack on
the Pitstop system, something they've apparently been doing periodically
and regularly. This particular attack involved a suicide run -- a Pfhor
transport ship, supported by nearly four dozen strike craft, entered the
system at a run, chose the two heaviest ships defending against it, and
detonated its engines in close proximity to the defenders. This tactic
was costly to the Allies: two Apori escort destroyers were lost, as well
as more than a dozen Camelynian fighters. Though the encounter was a
victory, given our badly-outnumbered state against the Pfhor, it won't
take many such "victories" for our position to turn truly hopeless.
