In the end, Kari decided that the simplest way to get the information she
needed was directly from the source. The Colonel had authorized her to use
whatever means necessary, after all. It was actually surprisingly easy.
Admiral Theron should have protected his databases more throughly. Maybe
security on Federation computer systems had improved over the hundred years
between Churchill and Coronado. More likely, the fact that Ma'Aru had
gotten the hacking software Commander Dejat had installed on Kelaka involved
had made things a little easier.

Kari skipped the parts she already knew -- the fact that Dosim Kor and
Caitlin Zar had been some of the founding members of the Pa'Zhera colony,
the fact that they'd had two children, the coming of the Thon. On the
recording, Caitlin Zar was a tall, statuesque blonde woman of obvious Trill
descent. She was seated in Theron's office, apparently completely composed.
Her voice was calm... Ma'Aru paused. Now that she stopped and considered,
it was interesting how similar the woman's voice was to the Captain's.
Although he was clearly off balance now, Kor was becoming legendary for his
serenity under nearly any circumstances. Zar's voice had the same
quality... as if she were relating someone else's story.

"During the rebellion," she was saying, "the Thon destroyed the last sources
of Aurnar and most of the food."

 "Aurnar?" Theron asked.

Zar nodded. "It's a medication... a bronchial sterilizer. Because of the
impurities in the atmosphere, all of us had to take Aurnar on a regular
basis. Without it, the passageways of your lungs would seize up within a
few days. The Thon, being anaerobic, were immune of course," Zar said,
showing a rare emotion -- annoyance. "We sent a distress signal, of
course -- we used the Thon's own ship to do it, once we took control of it.
But distances in the Federation were long in those days, and it was going to
be two weeks before they could send a ship."

Ma'Aru again skipped the next section. She knew the mathematics of the
situation. There had been something over 11,000 colonists on Pa'Zhera,
almost all of them Trill. Of the Trill, only about 200 were joined, the
remainder unjoined. The joined Trill were therefore about 2% of the total
population, the same proportion they held in the general Trill population
anywhere. She also knew that 2000 of the colonists had survived Pa'Zhera,
by boarding the Thon ship and getting out of the planet's toxic atmosphere.
Kari also didn't much care for Zar's long description of how the survivors
had had to modify the Thon ship to even hold or produce an atmosphere. What
she wanted to know was first, how the survivors were chosen, and second, how
and why the Captain's former host was invovled, other than being a survivor
 himself.

2000 colonists had survived, and of those, about 150 were joined Trill. In
other words, 75% of the joined Trill had survived. Further, 100% of the
symbionts had survived -- those symbionts that had been left on Pa'Zhera had
been cut from their hosts and had survived until rescue came as symbionts.
However, the almost 9000 unjoined Trill left on Pa'Zhera had suffocated and
died. Kari found a part of the video that stressed this point and realized
she'd advanced the recording too far. She listened briefly.

"Don't you see?" Zar was saying, "What Kor did was completely unnecessary!
Our symbionts would have lived, so our memories would have survived. All of
the joined Trill could have remained behind and given those 150 seats for
150 unjoined Trill." Zar's face became pained, her expression ugly. "He's
 guilty of murde--"

Ma'Aru cut that off and hit rewind. It took her another few minutes to find
 what she was looking for.

"How did you decide who would board the Thon ship?" Theron asked on the
 recording. His voice was somber.

"We kept it simple. We had a lottery," Zar said. In this part of the
recording, her voice had that serene quality back. "We calculated the
amount of air that the ship could produce in the amount of time before our
rescue, the capacity of the ship, the difficulties of getting people into
orbit... all the relevant factors. In the end, we determined that 2000
people would survive... so we effectively drew straws." Zar wrapped both
arms around herself and shivered at the memory. "One of the programmers set
 it up," she said.

"And then?" Theron asked. "What does Kor have to do with all of this?"

Zar looked up, and her eyes blazed. "He fixed the lottery! He rigged it so
that it would give preferential treatment to joined Trill!" She stood up,
practically snarling now. "What he doesn't realize is that I can prove it.
I kept the lottery programming," she said. "It's in Churchill's database.
I only learned the truth myself 50 years ago..."

Kari cut off the recording again and frowned. How had she missed that? She
turned to access the Churchill databases, feeling like she was finally
 getting somewhere.
