Notes from the Captain:
Lots and lots and lots in the sim summary this week. This has got to be
one of the longest, most complex character-driven sims we've done in a
very long time... and possibly ever. ;) Very, VERY nice work everyone!
As I've said before, any time anyone tells me that IRC sims can't do
character development, I tell them they haven't seen Coro. In the
meantime... ::grins:: my apologies for the extra-long sim summary.

Coro's crew's current position is the Reor system, which you'll find in
Grid 004 next to the smaller of the two nebulae on the main map. Of
course, if you don't know where Reor is by now, you're probably not paying
any attention to the map... ;-) Coronado herself is under repair in the
Pitstop system in Grid 001, between Reor and Gateway.
Sim Title: "Survived the Trial", Part 2
Teaser and Pre-Sim:
-------------------
Coronado is only a few weeks away from being ready to fly, so Commander
Tlaloco led a team to the Pitstop system to join Commander Oswald, who is
already there. Meanwhile, the Captain, Savant, and the bulk of the crew
are still on Reorsa. Admiral Theron summoned the Captain to his office,
telling him that a Trill that one of the Captain's former hosts knew, a
Caitlin Zar, has accused him of conspiracy and murder. The Captain meets
with Zar and Theron, and though the results of that meeting are secret,
the end result is not: the Captain has joined Savant in brooding over
something in his past...
During the Sim:
---------------
The Captain began the day by visiting Commanders Drexler and Savant, who
have been working on the false matter torpedo design, and the associated
modified torpedo tube to fire it. The new false matter torpedoes are much
larger than standard torpedoes and as a result, a much larger launcher
will be required to accomodate them. Commander Drexler had designed a
very intricate launcher that would not only fire the false matter torpedo,
but was also capable of handling both standard torpedoes and tri-cobalt
explosives. The downside: his modified launcher will require both more
time and more materials, requiring that repairs to Gryphon and Odyssey be
delayed. The Captain was reluctant to ask this of Captains Henes and
Margrove, who are also both anxious to have their ships operational.
Without actively saying no, the Captain suggested that Commander Farley
work with the two officers to see if the launcher can be redesigned so as
not to be so expensive.
Meanwhile, Commander Tlaloco's team arrived at Coronado in the Pitstop
system to find that all is not well with our frigate. For one thing, the
bridge module apparently slated for installation is clearly not adequate:
the console programming has been locked into very simple modes not at all
acceptable for a ship of Coro's mission, and the armoring and structural
integrity of the new module is marginal for Coro's mission at best. It is
hard to believe that this module was intended for us, and it became even
harder to believe when Tlaloco's team discovered that the controls are
apparently wired into another location on the ship in deck 9. Tlaloco's
suspicions were further raised when the computer refused to unlink the
bridge module's systems from this location or tell him what was there.
Even worse, the team discovered that a pair of virii were loose onboard
Coro. One was a relatively minor threat -- an airborne pathogen of no
danger to anyone who wasn't pregnant. This virus was cleared without much
difficulty. However, a second virus remained: Coro is apparently still
infected with the Pfhor biosoftware virus, something that Marcy was able
to confirm to his sorrow when the computer misinterpreted his attempts to
destroy the virus and caused damage to the ship. Lieutenant Ma'Aru, in
Reor, was able to confirm the virus from a message sent by Lieutenant
Thompson from Coronado. Clearly, the biosoftware virus will need to be
cleared from Coro's systems before the frigate can fly...
The Captain by this time had moved on to the Reorsan Ministry of Defense
to talk to Colonel Ironside. While Ironside and Ma'Aru were working to
determine what threat Caitlin Zar might pose to the Captain, Lora Kor was
apparently making his own plans. He cornered the Colonel and asked for
Ironside's assurances that if Lora Kor is "not able" to join the crew of
Coro when the frigate is ready to depart, that Ironside would be willing
and able to stand in as Commander Daren's Executive Officer. When
Ironside pressed to find out what this might mean, the Captain refused to
explain, but insisted in Ironside's promise. Somewhat reluctantly, the
Colonel agreed, becoming even more concerned with the Captain entrusted
the Sword of Jacob Arnath to him to give to Daren. The Colonel redoubled
his efforts to find out what might be happening between Lora Kor and Zar,
giving Ma'Aru under the table orders to hack into the files if she had to
to find out what's going on.
Savant is in similar straights due to her infection by the Pfhor
biosoftware virus. Clearly for both the Captain and Savant, something is
boiling just under the surface -- Savant's emotional control in her case,
whatever situation is in his past for the Captain. Ironside and Ma'Aru
were able to work out some of the details in the latter case: apparently,
Kor's host 100 years ago was named Dosim, and was a colonist on the planet
Pa'Zhera 3. At that time, Caitlin Zar was his wife when the planet was
overrun by a hostile race known as the Thon. For six months, Pa'Zhera was
cut off from the rest of Trill society and in the end, only about 2000 of
the 11,000 colonists there survived. The troubling thing is that of 200
joined Trill that were on the colony, 150 of the hosts survived, and every
symbiont survived. This raises serious questions about whether joined
Trill were favored over unjoined Trill in whatever selection process was
used to determine which 2000 of the colonists survived a century ago.
Ma'Aru learned something even stranger: within six months of the incident,
all 200 of the hosts were dead, 50 of them on the colony itself, the other
150 of four specific causes...
Finally, all of what was happening on Reorsa was happening in the
background of stronger and stronger earthquakes that were shaking the
area. Earthquakes should be rare to non-existent on this part of the
planet: the island on which Churchill Downs rests is not volcanic, and
there are no fault lines in the area. Once Lieutenant Prescot arrived in
the area of the space port, however, he was able to quickly determine that
a large number of Hounds are apparently deep, deep underneath the ground
under Churchill Downs, and may be attempting to destabilize the geologic
plate under the city, threatening an enormous earthquake!
