Notes from the Captain:
The events of Monday's sim are, of course, completely overshadowed by the
events in New York City some fourteen hours afterwards. Some of you may
wonder about my feelings. Put simply, I cannot yet wrap words around the
rage and fury I'm feeling for the perpetrators, the anguish and sorrow
I'm feeling for the victims. I, like many Americans, lost friends and
co-workers on Tuesday morning. I, like many Americans, enjoyed my visits
to the World Trade Center complex and its twin towers. I have memories
of people I will never see again, of places I will never visit again.
How am I feeling? I will rely on the words of another American, Tom
Clancy, who once wrote in fiction of the leader of a nation that would
condone associating itself with the slaughter of innocents:
"I think you may have associated yourself with the wrong friends... if my
impression is correct, then your country could well pay dearly for that
misjudgment. We have experienced a direct attack on our citizens. It was
a particularly cruel and barbaric attack... Those guilty of launching
that attack will face our justice. We will not send notes of protest. We
will not call a special meeting of the UN Security Council in New York.
We will make war. We will make war with all the power and rage this
country and her citizens can muster. Ordinary men, women, and children
have been murdered within our borders by a foreign power... Does your
country wish to be associated with those acts? If so... if you wish to be
part of that, then the war commences now."
For those of you in America, the House of Representatives has passed a
measure urging all Americans to purchase and fly an American flag. Mine
is hanging outside my house right now. For those outside America, thank
you for all of the kind words and wishes your leaders are sending us.
As for Coro... Coro will go on. My actions will not be defined for me by
cowards who slaughter innocents. There will be a moment of silence before
the Coro sim on Monday, and before each sim nearest 11 September for as
long as Coronado or any other Internet game I run endures. However, those
of you who wish not to be present are excused for the next two sims
automatically, and longer if you need longer -- just let me know.

Sim Title: "The First Inkling", Part 2
Coronado held position in system G039, supporting the recovery of patrol
2/7, which was attacked by the Accursed. A Marine fire team went aboard
the small patrol ship before the full Away team, intent on securing the
area. Instead, they encountered a single lifeform wihch disabled one
Marine and threatened to kill the whole team before it was destroyed by
1st Lieutenant Moore. The creature exploded at time of death, spraying
shrapnel from what was apparently a metal helmet or armor it was wearing.
Because of the explosion, we don't know anything about the lifeform.
The away team quickly beamed over, first to help the wounded Marines (who
were soon evacuated to Coro's Sickbay), then to investigate what might
have happened to patrol 2/7 and the presence of the Accursed fighter
rammed into it. Unfortunately, due to the patrol ship's condition after
not one, but two firefights, there wasn't much left of the interior.
Lieutenant Ma'Aru was able to determine that the contents of the ship's
computer had been copied and then destroyed somehow, and that the ship's
computer had further been overcome and taken over from outside the ship,
but that was all that she could determine.
Meanwhile, Coro herself tracked the presence of four Accursed transport
ships outside the system, two each in two neighboring systems. After
investigating their spacefold drive and its ability to allow Accursed
ships to appear instantly in their target system, we learned some
interesting things. Commander Drexler determined that the ships must
remain in a system once they have jumped into it in order to either
recharge their drive systems or calibrate them to the next jump. He
estimated that the fastest that this could be done would be 10 to 20
minutes. Ensign Wilk was able to determine that an Accursed ship's entry
point into a system is easily predictable as long as the departure system
is known. Either of these pieces of information could prove to be vital
tactical data at some point in the future.
We had little time to consider this, however, since all four Accursed
vessels folded into G039 within minutes of each other... and instead of
attacking Coronado, seemed intent on retaking patrol 2/7. This doesn't
mean that Coro was not attacked; on the contrary, two of the ships
launched withering attacks on the frigate, including one ship which
struck at Coronado with a withering plasma beam wich sliced through the
starboard shields and caused serious damage to the secondary hull near
Main Engineering. The Captain again ordered a withdrawl, which Major
Wayne and 2nd Lieutenant Prescot supported with their fighter wings.
That withdrawl was complicated, however, by the fact that the Away team
had moved on to investigating the Accursed fighter rammed into patrol 2/7.
Lieutenant Farley, in particular, entered the ship to study it... and was
enveloped by some kind of web or filament! Farley was soon completely
trapped, lifesigns so low as to be nearly non-existant. Commander Daren
attempted to rescue the young Engineer, only to become partially enveloped
himself. With Coro under heavy attack, Lieutenant Marcy became desperate
to rescue the Away team so that the frigate could escape. He first
attempted to beam Commander Daren from the web and was successful except
for the XO's trapped right arm... unfortunately, the transporter, unable
to lock onto the arm, left it behind! Daren reappeared in Coro's
transporter room, bleeding profusely but was soon in the care of the
Medical staff.
Marcy was given a few extra minutes in which to work with the arrival of
the cavalry: starships Renegade, Resolute, and Blackrazor arrived from a
nearby system where they had been battling two of the transports. The new
arrivals provided cover for the badly-damaged Coro and time for Marcy to
beam to patrol 2/7 and literally cut Farley free of the filament. This
caused the engineer excruciating pain, but was successful... Marcy pulled
Farley out of there alive and the two were beamed back to the ship. Coro
then completed her withdrawl, her Spectre wings covering.
