 Notes from the Captain:

Hi all. :-) I want to apologize again for all of the network disruptions
we've been having lately. ("Why are you apologizing, Ross?" I can hear a
bunch of people asking, "You didn't do it." True, but I'm the reason we
haven't moved yet. ;-) ) MacKay, our subfleet CO, is in the process of
talking it out with Kilmarac right now, and I've got my fingers crossed
for a smooth sim with no network problems on Monday.

 We can only hope. ;-)

Remember, a very detailed map of the part of M64 we find ourselves in is
 available for your review at:

 http://www.jestertrek.com/m64/

Our current position is the Enigma system, which you'll find in Grid 002
(immediately to the left of Gateway on the large map on the first page).

Sim Title: "Minus 60 Centigrade", Part 3

Coronado and seven other ships currently comprise the "Enigma battle
group," centered on U.S.S. Gryphon, our Akira through-deck fighter
carrier. The group is still in the Enigma system, and were in the
process of evacuating the system due to a very large group of probes
being deployed from the planet. However, in the midst of the evacuation,
the Traxati apparently initiated communications with Coro in the form of
an electromagnetic disruption of our ship's warp core on an escalating
frequency made up of a series of prime numbers. The Captain, commanding
the group, ordered everyone to hold position while this was investigated.

We discovered that the Traxati are indeed an intelligent species, and
apparently are world-sized... the entire Enigma planet is a Traxati! Made
up of a crystal memory core made of diamond and using the probes as both
sensors and defense, the Traxati are more machine than biological life-
form. However, they are unmistakably intelligent. Using Coro's own power
the Traxati used a large mass of the hydrocarbon "snow" that covers the
surface of Enigma to construct a sort of enormous hologram that both those
aboard ship and those on the planet surface could see.

Over the course of about 20 minutes, the Traxati used this projection to
show us 20 million years of their history. The first probes were shown
arriving in the M64 galaxy and were also shown selecting their target
systems and reproducing. We were also witness to the construction of the
Gateway hypergate and the conversion of a single planet in the Enigma
system to a resting place for the Traxati lifeform. Every other planet in
the former Enigma and Gateway systems were used as building material for
the hypergate. We were further shown the Traxati's first attempts to
expand their presence in this galaxy.

These last images, in particular, were interesting because the Traxati
represented M64 accurately but for a menacing red "smoke" that covered
much of the galaxy. This red smoke was shown preventing the Traxati
expansion across M64, and further causing the Traxati to abandon all but
their single holding in M64 and the Gateway hypergate itself. In
particular, we were shown that the Traxati themselves disabled the Gateway
hypergate by somehow disrupting its electrical characteristics. It is
probable based on this information that the Gateway hypergate has always
been one-way: into M64 only, with no escape.

Why the Traxati regard the red smoke as so threatening was not something
that could be communicated visually. However, the Enigma world-life did
make it clear that if the ships of Task Group 5.4 could somehow push back
the red smoke presense, then the Traxati would be able to repair the
Gateway hypergate. It seems we have an ally... if we join forced with the
Traxati against whatever presence they find threatening in this galaxy.
The one worry is that the source of the red smoke was shown as the dark
cloud at the center of M64... some 8,000 light-years away.

Based on this new information, the Captain recalled the away teams on the
surface of Enigma... Enigma itself is revealed as the "body" of a Traxati,
and as such, it seemed a bit rude to stand on it. The Traxati responded
by giving Savant a small gift: a 20 meter communications probe of some
kind and a small remote transmitter to activate it. It is clear that the
communications probe can later be used to call for Traxati assistance,
presumably with the red smoke presence. Savant, however, regarded the
communications probe as a bit of a pet, even naming it...
