Notes from the Captain:
I'm normally spending August sim reports complaining about how much I hate
late summer and all the vacations associated with it. This year, I don't
get to do that. ;-) Attendance has been very good, and everyone has been
excellent about letting me know when you can't attend the sims. So, all
I'm going to say is thank you and keep it up!

Our current position is the Enigma system, which you'll find in Grid 002
(immediately to the left of Gateway on the large map on the first page).
Sim Title: "Minus 60 Centigrade", Part 2
Coronado and seven other ships currently comprise the "Enigma battle
group," centered on U.S.S. Gryphon, our Akira through-deck fighter
carrier. The group is currently in the Enigma system, investigating a
Traxati colony world... a class M planet that orbits a yellow star all
alone about 45 light-years west of Gateway. Coronado, Renegade, and our
Marine transport, Douglas MacArthur, successfully deployed a Marine
assault force on the planet made up of companies from all three ships.
Meanwhile, a science team aboard Kelaka also set down on the planet.
Arriving on the surface, both the Marines and the science team found the
same thing: the surface was cold and grey, swept over by a biting wind,
and covered with grey-black hydrocarbon "snow." The average surface
temperature was indeed 60 degrees below zero Celsius, necessitating that
everyone on the surface protect themselves from the bitter cold. Here and
there, though, open pools of liquid water dotted the surface.
While the Marines set up a defensive perimeter with their shield
generators, tanks, and skimmers, the science team aboard Kelaka set down
near one of the pools. They immediately began investigating both the pool
and the snow. The team quickly determined that the snow sits on the true
surface of the planet, which is apparently made out of crystallized
carbon... better known as diamond. Noone commented on the facts inherent
in an entire planet crusted in diamond, but set to work trying to
understand what they were seeing. Savant, meanwhile, braved the pool to
discover that it does not freeze because the water is held in its current
state by a soup of biological enzymes and proteins, perhaps even
comprising some sort of digestive system. If so, it is a very unusual
digestive system, because only metals and crystals are affected by it.
Meanwhile, both the Marines and the ships above came under more or less
constant attack by the probes and linked probe groups. The Marine ships
were forced to fall back to Gryphon and her escorts, but were eventually
successful in driving the probes back and reestablishing their positions
above the Marine beachhead. Fortunately, damage continues to be light to
moderate, with only another small group of fighters being destroyed. The
Marines on the surface, meanwhile, were having their own problems trying
to block or blunt attacks from probes patrolling the surface and testing
the Marine shield generators. They were, however, successful in keeping
the probes back and away from the science teams. Major Wayne, in
particular, found one source of probes -- the hydrocarbon snow itself
seems to be the building blocks for the probes -- and destroyed a group of
probes before they could be fully manufactured.
However, with the entire surface of the planet covered by this snow, the
crew quickly realized that there would be no way to stop the planet from
manufacturing a nearly unlimited number of the probes. The Captain, after
drawing this conclusion, ordered that the group begin pulling back in
advance of a general retreat. In addition, he ordered the Marines and
their equipment beamed back from the planet, and for the science teams to
return before the system could fill with an unstoppable wave of probes.
In Engineering, another problem developed: some kind of resonant
interference with the warp core on a steadily rising frequency threatened
Coro's ability to escape the system. However, Savant realized that the
frequency range was steadily rising according to a prime number sequence.
This pointed to one possible conclusion: that the Traxati were attempting
a primitive form of communication. The Captain ordered the evacuation
paused long enough to "transmit" a similiar disruption using our own warp
core as the transmitter. A few seconds after doing this, the Traxati
probes halted their advance...
