Notes from the Captain:

After last episode's rather mystical presentation, I thought it best to
go back to frigate basics, as it were. ;-) Remember, combat is chaotic,
with lots of things going on. Please make sure you keep track of what
other people are doing, especially things that might affect your
character! In particular, if you require someone's help or permission
to beam up, beam down, launch a fighter or other small craft, or other
similar situations, make sure you get that person into a private message
to coordinate your activities. You *are* allowed to send messages to
people other than the CO during the sim. ;-)

Our current position is the Enigma system, which you'll find in Grid 002
(immediately to the left of Gateway on the large map on the first page).

Sim Title: "Minus 60 Centigrade", Part 1

Lieutenant JG Ma'Aru spent much of the day after our departure from
Taer'Mori in the Command Information Center, uploading the most recent
stellar cartography data released by the Taer. Late into that night,
while reviewing this data, she discovered a system that the Taer had named
"Enigma." The Enigma system would normally be of little interest: it is
a single class M planet in orbit of a typical yellow star. However, it
was flagged for review for two reasons: first, that class M planet has a
mean surface temperature of minus 60 degrees Centigrade; and second,
despite the fact that Enigma is in a very dusty, meterioid-filled region
of space, there is absolutely no debris in the system itself. The only
object in the system is the single planet. This matches the configuration
of the Pandemonium system, a known Traxati colony world, which Coronado
and the rest of Task Group 5.4 approached last October, but were unable to
investigate. When we approached Pandemonium, we were fought off by a
large group of unmanned Traxati probes.

In our current situation, however, the rules of engagement must change.
Because the group is trapped in the M64 galaxy behind a Traxati hypergate,
we must do everything possible to either contact the Traxati or gain the
information we need from the planet to repair the gate. The idea of a
conflict with the Traxati and their probes was not regarded with any
particular regret aboard Coronado -- few aboard can forget that our first
encounter with this race came when they obliterated the homeworlds of two
sentient species in Federation space, the Zadari and the Moltarr. Indeed,
many aboard were eager for the confrontation. Of course, we still have no
idea what a Traxati looks like... all we have encountered to date is their
technology and their automated weapon-probes. In the past, the probes
have been cylindrical, about 50-70 meters long, and armed with the ability
to either fire small neutronium needles at their targets or convert small
amounts of matter -- up to six to eight cubic meters -- into antimatter.

Vice Admiral Brian Aldur ordered that a battle group be assembled around
Coronado and U.S.S. Gryphon. Eight ships were selected to lead the
assault. We assumed that there would be probes in Enigma. While the main
force of the battle group assaulted them, Coro, Renegade, and Douglas
MacArthur would land a science team on Enigma, under the shield of a full
Marine landing on the planet. The battle group assembled in a system
about 15 light-years "north" of Enigma, then proceeded into the system.

Our assumption that Enigma would be guarded by Traxati probes turned out
to be completely accurate -- approximately 200 of them launched from the
surface of the planet. However, these probes were larger, flatter, and
hexagonal rather than cylindrical. They were also covered with small
data and materials ports, all identical. These probes gave every
appearance of being more primitive versions of the Traxati probes we are
used to, especially when their only initial weapon turned out to be some
kind of high energy plasma bolt. This didn't last long -- we found that
these probes CAN fire the neutronium needles, but only when 5 or more of
the hexagonal probes link together and use additional connected probes for
construction mass. Before we determined this, U.S.S. Renegade and U.S.S.
Fearless had been holed, and two fighters destroyed. Once we learned that
these probes must link to fire the needles, all of the group ships
concentrated their fire on linked probe groups. Our altered strategy was
much more successful, and the Marine ships were able to slip into Enigma
orbit and deploy the assault forces.

Meanwhile, the science team, aboard Kelaka, continued to scan the planet
and the area while waiting for the Marines to establish their beachhead.
While linked, they were able to provide point defense for Coronado against
individual probes and attempt to scan the planet. However, like
Pandemonium, virtually any kind of sensor scan was reflected from the
surface. Only very basic heat and EM scans of the planet will operate.
Enigma is apparently loath to give up her secrets. With the Marine
assault in full swing, Kelaka began her approach for landing. Meanwhile,
two more Spectres were destroyed, including Lieutenant Petrovna's bird.
Petrovna herself ejected and her cockpit module soft-landed on the surface
of Enigma, ironically making her the planet's first humanoid visitor...
