 Notes from the Captain:

One of the more metaphysical sims we've done in a while. Unfortunately,
the atmosphere was disrupted rather thoroughly by a network outage early
in the sim, but I think everyone recovered quite well. :-) Nice work!
Next week, we get into something a little bit more straightforward.

Remember, a very detailed map of the part of M64 we find ourselves in is
 available for your review at:

 http://www.jestertrek.com/m64/

Our current position is the Taer system, which you'll find in Grid 003
(near the upper left corner of the large map on the first page).

Ensign Marcy has asked to be placed on Extended LOA due to a mid-summer
move that he is involved in. Good luck with the move, Marcy! We'll hope
to see you back on Coro when you're all settled! Lieutenant Skylooker in
Engineering is also beset with moving, but hopes to be back in two or
three weeks. Yet another reason I like mid-summer so much... ;-)

Sim Title: "Children of the Moon", Part 3

Reunited by the Taerens, the Coronado senior officers were finally able to
compare notes. The room we were led into was little different from a
roofless conference room, large and with a plain wooden table at its
center. This time, however, the table was associated with a number of
plain wooden tables instead of objects for the Coro personnel to confront.
The same single light provided the only illumination; however, the light
seemed a bit dimmer than it has in the past. After comparing notes, we
were able to determine a pair of significant facts. First, the Taerens
have been creating "situations" for the crew to react to, then watching
the reactions. The Taerens claim that these are not tests, but simply
ways for the crew to get to know each other and themselves better.
Second, we've apparently been held for something on the order of five
 or six days.

However, the testing-not-testing seemed to be over, and a single Taeren
remained within the room with the Coronado personnel. He was none too
communicative, however, and seemed to enter mostly to make sure that
noone was in too much distress, and to provide food and other refreshments
which simply appeared from nothing on the table. In the process, however,
he let slip an interesting fact: that "all those with souls are welcome
to visit Taer." This has some pretty startling moral implications, since
Savant was present "in the flesh." Even more interesting, however, was
Mr. Dejat's presence, since he clearly remembered being killed on Coro's
Bridge when the attack he launched on Taeren vessels was reflected,
damaging the frigate. The Taeren did not stay for these discussions; he
looked as if he himself was not well, stumbling and looking quite tired.
Before anyone could press him, he disappeared from the room.

The revelation combined with Savant's... condition led us to believe that
like the Talosians that their culture seems to resemble, the Taerens live
a life of the mind rather than one of the physical. This later turned out
to be true, and was proven to us when the illusions created by the Taerens
suddenly collapsed with little warning, leaving the Coronado senior staff
on a barren desert. Night had fallen, and with it, cold winds whipped
across the rocks and dunes. The single light that has always been overhead
turned out to be a waning moon. Protecting ourselves from the wind was
best we could, Colonel Ironside led the group to a crude shelter, built of
wood and nestled against some of the rocks. In the shelter, we found four
Taeren, apparently unconscious. There was some fear that the Taeren might
be a dying race, but Dr. Ungtae made it clear that the Taerens were alive
and unharmed despite their extremely primitive living arrangements.

The combination of events allowed us to piece together what had happened.
When reality reasserted itself, so did Savant's holographic nature and her
contact with Coronado. She was able to report that there are only about
150,000 Taeren on the planet, none living in cities, all apparently living
in the crude shelters like the one we found ourselves in. The Captain
ordered most of the Coronado personnel back to the ship, but retained a
small team to reenter the Taeren mind-life to get some final answers and
to find the fate of Commander Dejat, who did not reappear in the desert
 with the others.

Within the Taeren mind-life, the Captain was able to confirm our guesses
and the Taeren's essentially friendly and inquisitive nature. The single
Taeren that remained urged us not to worry, and that their species "feeds"
on the light of their moon and energy from something called "Na'Mori,"
which translated literally, means "God's Place." When their moon is new,
the Taerens are weakened. When it is full, they are correspondingly
stronger. This also explains how Taerens are able to travel from place to
place instantaneously -- they don't actually travel. What other species
see on their worlds are projections sent from Taer.

However, the Taerens did request that our Flight Operations officer,
Commander Fornan Dejat, remain on Taer as an ambassador. Since in our
humanoid reality, Dejat lives only with the help of extensive life-
support after nearly being killed on Coro's Bridge, the Captain agreed.
With the mystery explained and Taeren goodwill seemingly confirmed, we are
 preparing to leave orbit.

<CoroLCARS> =.\ction= The Taeren suddenly loses his balance and
