Joe Fisher smiled. "That's it," he said, indicating Reunion Square with a
tilt of his head. The two boys, rambunctious, ran ahead of the group, which
was made up of most of Fisher's family, including two children and their
wives and four grandchildren. As his grandsons ranged ahead, Fisher led the
rest of his family into the Square proper. It was a warm day, and Reor
burned hot in the sky. The entire group was actually visiting Reorsa from
their homes on Meyer IV. Joe was sweating; Reor was much brighter than the
Regency star he had become used to.
Built in the mid-2300s, Reunion Square was one of two anchors -- with
Fisher's Landing -- for Churchill Down's Old City borders. Though most of
Old City and Fisher's Landing itself had been destroyed by Pfhor bombardment
and later rebuilt, Reunion Square itself had survived the Troubles
untouched. On two sides, an enormous L-shaped park bordered the square,
filled with plants from Earth and other United Federation of Planets
members. Along the border separating the park from Reunion Square proper,
more than two dozen flagpoles signified member systems in the growing
Alliance. A light breeze stirred the flags, making the designs on many
visible. The rebuilt Old City provided the south border to the square;
government buildings provided the east border, particuarly More's Tower and
the new Alliance Defenders building, with the rest of new city lying beyond.
The Square itself was dominated by the guardian statues -- gryphons -- which
stood at each corner and local superstition said had protected the square
from the Pfhor and their Hunters. Two smaller statues were almost
overwhelmed by the rest of the finery, including a marble fountain lying
partially underground. Seemingly random jets of water arched over the
corners of the square as the buried computers traced designs in the air
above the square with bursts from the jets. Laughing children, most in
bathing suits, a few not, and even a few of their parents played in the
water jets. Other groups, large and small, walked the square or sat in the
park having lunch or examined the statues or the flagpoles or the central
fountain itself. On this warm spring day, it seemed half the Alliance was
here, enjoying each other's company. At night, the square was no less
popular as the water jets were joined by colored lights, tracing a magical
and firework-like display of water arching over the square.
The smaller statue of the two in the center of the Square depicted three men
and one woman facing each other in a circle. Each carried a sword, and each
sword was upraised, as were the faces of the four. "Defiance" that statue
was called, and its history was dark, but it was fitting that the scene it
depicted adorned one part of Reunion Square. Fisher led his family toward
the other statue.
This one was larger, but more sedate somehow, and there wasn't a single
schoolchild on the planet that didn't know its story. It depicted two
people, a man and a woman. The man was a standing humanoid, probably in his
40s, and wore an old style Starfleet uniform. One of his hands was
outstretched, helping the woman begin to rise from an antigravity chair.
She was clearly much older, with long hair and the graceful upswept ears
that declared her as a Vulcan. Around the two, a small half-circle of
assorted humanoids and braids were watching, each immortalized in marble and
bronze. Fisher recognized his younger image in the gathered group,
immortalized among the others. He smiled, very slightly. It wasn't a
half-bad representation. That statue, of course, was called "Reunion."
One of Fisher's granddaughters, holding her mother's hand, looked up. "Were
you really here, Grandpa Joe?" she asked.
One of the curators approached the group, smiling broadly and opening his
mouth to start his spiel. The curator was young, no more than 22,
blonde-haired and obviously eager. No doubt he had described Reunion Square
to thousands of visitors before Joe Fisher and his family. However, the
curator closed his mouth again when he saw the pin Joe was wearing on the
tab collar of his shirt. "R.S. Destiny Plankholder", that pin said to
anyone who could read it. Turning to examine Joe's face more closely, the
curator's eyes widened a bit in recognition and nodding a respectful
greeting, he faded back. Joe nodded back to the curator and turned to
answer his granddaughter's question.
