Finishing his final weld, Captain Tebrun Lora Kor released the gamma welder
array he was holding, where it drifted a few centimeters away, then turned
to have a look around. There really was no substitute for stargazing with
 one's own eyes.

Like about four dozen other members of Coro's crew, the Captain was outside
the ship assisting with the hull repairs. One team worked with Coro's
single heavy replicator, converting asteroid metals into hull plating and
carbon-carbon armor. Another team, including Lt. Commander Oswald, worked
in the 'tween hulls spaces, laying down the delicate net of fiber optics,
EPS plasma relays, and diburnium-osmium deflector filaments that made up the
"blood vessels and nerves" of a modern starship skin. The Captain and about
a dozen others then followed, laying down the outer hull and then applying
the carbon-carbon fiber armoring that made Coro's hull so tough and
resilient. Coronado, like most of the Task Group 5.4 ships, had been badly
scorched by several close passes to the blue-white supergiant Hayashi. The
teams worked steadily to correct the damage.

Chuckling to himself inside his EVA suit, the Captain recalled the wide-eyed
look Oswald had given him while talking him into this duty. Colonel
Ironside, in particular, had grumbled that the young Chief Engineer had
"gone through the ship like a plague," impressing virtually every
technically-able hand she could into her work gangs. Looking through past
histories on the crew, she had found that in addition to his science
background, the Captain also had significant experience in hands-on
construction of light fighters and shuttles. While Oswald hadn't gotten
everyone she'd gone after, she'd managed to recruit a significant
percentage, including every Spectre technician in Coro's battallion. The
latter was part of what had Ironside grumbling.

In reality, the Captain had to admit he was impressed with the young woman's
recent spunk, though her methods spoke of emotional blackmail. Chuckling
again, he recalled Oswald's cogent argument: "Without your help, the six
hours you gave me just isn't enough time to get this done, Captain!" Lora
Kor had to admit that someone using his own orders against him wasn't a
strategy he'd encountered before... it had worked in the end, he admitted to
himself with a smile. He'd have to work on that.

The view made the work worth it, however. Coro continued to orbit yellow
star J035 near the outer edge of the system and this bright beacon obscured
the stars "east" of the ship. However, starlight from the hundreds of local
suns to the "west" bathed Coro in soft light. Off in the distance, he could
make out the bright fuzzy patch that marked the nebula off to the northwest
that lay near their next course. Turning in almost the opposite direction,
the steady red light of Gateway indicated the direction Coro had come from.
Between them, the brightest star visible was what looked like a blue-white
 supergiant off to the west...

"Woolgathering again, Captain?" an amused voice sounded in his ear. Lora
Kor turned to find Lt. Commander Oswald watching him with an amused look on
her pixie face and a definite twinkle in her eye.

Lora Kor smiled and tabbed his comm. "Taking a bit of a break, Commander.
The leader of this work effort is quite the taskmaster," he said, teasing.
"However, this area is now complete forward to deck seven, section nine."

Oswald nodded, her motions slowed by zero gravity. "The aft teams are also
done. We've completed everything we can do without a week at Pearl," she
said, smirking. Oswald hated relying on outside help for anything, but the
structural reinforcing of the nacelles and some of Coro's other work would
require nothing less than the heavy-lift capability of Pearl's two tugs.

The Captain, blinked, surprised. "Already?" he said, turning to look at the
forward section of the hull. To his surprise, he was floating just aft of
section twelve. He'd covered almost forty meters of Coro's hull without
realizing it. The Captain had forgotten how involving a repeatable task
could be... he swung his arm up to check the time on the arm console of his
 suit.

Missing his surprise, Oswald transmitted back, "Yes, Captain -- we're
 finished right on time."

Lora Kor turned back, slowly, lowering his arm. "I show us ten minutes
late, actually, Commander," he said with a smile. Oswald gave him that
wide-eyed look again, and the Captain laughed. Tabbing his comm again, he
contacted the ship. "Lora Kor to Daren," he said.

"Go ahead, Captain," Daren's voice came back almost immediately.

"We're done out here. Just as soon as all of the teams are back aboard, put
us on course for Ensign Mayo's target... nothing too direct. Make it look
like we're heading for a system in the vicinity of their position."

"Aye, Captain." The communication circuit closed with a click.

The Captain turned back to Oswald, clipped the gamma welder to his suit, and
winked at Oswald. Offering his arm, he indicated the nearby deck nine,
section twelve airlock. "Shall we, Commander?" he asked. Oswald laughed
 and nodded.

Arm in arm, the Captain and the Chief Engineer headed for the airlock.
