"Welcome back, Exec," Captain Lora Kor said, looking over his shoulder from
the command chair.
"Thank you, Captain," Bentall said. "Is there any particular reason you
recalled us?" he asked.
The Captain nodded, giving Commander Dejat a smile in passing as the
Cardassian dropped into the Flight Ops chair. "We've identified an opening
in the front lines near Starbase 23. We monitored a battle there this
morning," Lora Kor said. From the tone of the Captain's voice, Bentall
didn't have to ask how the battle had gone. "The bad news is that the base
was either captured or destroyed," the Captain said nodding, apparently
reading Bentall's thoughts. "The good news is that at the moment, there's
only a handful of Klingon ships in the area."
Lora Kor turned as Daren took the Tactical seat. "Mr. Daren," Lora Kor
said, "you'll find a holographic matrix for a Klingon repair ship in the
database. Please alter our holographic defense system for the new matrix."
The Captain then turned to Dejat. "Commander Dejat, once that's done, warp
9 toward Starbase 23. There's already a support group en route. Let's play
one of the stragglers." Dejat and Daren both nodded and got to work.
Colonel Ironside cleared his throat from Mission Ops. "Captain, we've
recovered the Spectres that ran the sweep of the area around our last
attack. It doesn't look like the Klingons caught on to what happened, and
they've brought us a small gift." Ironside turned to his console. "One of
the transponders from the repair ships survived. By the time we are in
position, my boys should be able to repair it enough to link it into our
communications system. It won't work long, but it should remain functional
long enough for us to get past the front lines." Ironside glanced over to
the Captain, smile feral. "It might even fool some of the ships long enough
for us to get close, if that's what you'd like to do."
Lora Kor nodded, matching the Colonel's smile. Both were obviously thinking
of more silhouettes for the wardroom hull. "Excellent work, Colonel."
Underneath them, the Coronado jumped to warp, en route for Starbase 23.
"Captain," Bentall said, "we need to make a small detour before we get
there." The Captain inclined his head, indicating Bentall should continue.
"During our reconnaissance, we were contacted by a Rear Admiral Todd
Marshall, aboard the U.S.S. Vanguard. They apparently have some data and
personnel that they need to get aboard the Coronado. Marshall didn't
completely explain why, but he seemed to think it was critically important."
"Marshall?" Lora Kor asked, head still inclined. "I believe I've heard of
him." The Captain paused. "Request approved. See to it. Chances are,
you're going to have to take the Kelaka back out, though." Dejat's head
came up, obviously listening in. "If we break formation from the support
group, it'll raise suspicions," the Captain said. Bentall nodded.
----------------
In the deeps of space, two Klingon shuttlecraft rendezvoused and linked
together, back to back. Or at least, that's what an external observer would
have seen. In reality, Kelaka linked with a Targa class runabout.
"Welcome aboard miss," Fornan Dejat said formally, the question apparent in
his voice.
"Sandra Nouveau," the woman said, completing Dejat's question. She was
human and in her 40s, somewhat short with long brown hair. "And thank you.
How far are we from the Coronado?" Behind the woman, technicians were
transferring gear from the runabout to Kelaka. Dejat looked over all the
Starfleet-issue crates and packages curiously, then turned back to the
woman.
"Not far, ma'am," Dejat replied. She hadn't specified a rank and wasn't
wearing a Starfleet uniform, but she carried herself very formally. Unsure
exactly how he should address her, Dejat became his most formal. "Coro's
still en route for Starbase 23, but we should be able to rendezvous with her
in an hour or so if all goes well."
Nouveau nodded and dropped into one of Kelaka's seats, producing a PADD and
beginning to read. She didn't say another word the entire trip to Coronado.
