"Captain, I have a full damage report ready for your review."
Captain Tebrun Lora Kor looked up from something he was reading on his
terminal as Coronado's Executive Officer entered, offering him a PADD. The
Captain nodded and accepted the PADD, turning it on to read it.
The ship was still at strict EMCON, most power systems shut down, even to
the internal and external lighting, which was at minimum levels. Coronado's
holographic defenses were engaged, and the ship was nearly undetectable.
While he waited, Commander Jarod Bentall regarded the Captain's terminal in
the Ready Room. Most of the text on the screen was too small to see, but
one line of text was clear: EXECUTE UNRESTRICTED AIR AND SUBMARINE WARFARE
AGAINST JAPAN.
Raising his eyebrows, Bentall looked over at Lora Kor. "May I?" he asked,
indicating the terminal.
"Of course," the Captain said nodding, turning the terminal the rest of the
way around toward Bentall, then continued to read the PADD.
The terminal was filled with information about a 20th century conflict on
Earth called the Second World War, specifically the parts of that conflict
that regarded submarine warfare. On the screen were strategies used, the
names of ships and personnel, and how they had fared. Cross-link files were
available with the memoirs of several submarine commanders. Flags on two of
those files indicated that the Captain had already read them. Bentall
looked up to find the Captain watching him.
"It's an interesting parallel to the situation we're in," the Captain said
conversationally. "Did you know during that conflict, skippers of those
submarines entered the actual harbors of their enemy to conduct stealth
attacks on shipping? More than forty sorties were ordered into Manila
harbor in the Phillipines alone during the war, and the American submarines
sank dozens of ships in that harbor without a single lost submarine, despite
everything that the Japanese did to defend the harbor."
Bentall was a little taken aback by the Captain's enthusiasm with the topic
and nodded cautiously. "I can see the parallel," he said. He could.
Coronado was currently light-years behind enemy lines, watching entire
battle groups and their supply ships pass the system she was hiding in.
Lora Kor nodded. "One submarine, the U.S.S. Tautog, is credited with 26
sinkings of capital ships, both military and supply. Three other submarines
did nearly as well. Nearly 1400 sinkings by submarines all told, with only
52 submarines lost during the entire conflict, many of those to accident
rather than hostile action. One of the other sides in the conflict, the
Germans, did nearly as well using the same tactics." Shaking himself, the
Captain passed the PADD back to Bentall. "It looks like we got off pretty
lightly. The estimate is that we'll be ready to leave this system in a
couple of days?" Bentall nodded. "Good," the Captain said, "as I said, I
want you to prepare a team to take Kelaka out and see if you can scout us a
way across the front lines back to the Starfleet side."
"What do you have planned for Coronado in the meantime?" Bentall asked.
The Captain smiled... a slightly feral smile... and pointed at the
"UNRESTRICTED SUBMARINE WARFARE" line. "I thought we might see how good a
submarine Coronado makes. However, I've got a bit more planning before
we're ready for that. I'll brief the senior staff tomorrow afternoon. Let
them know. Thank you, Exec." The Captain turned off the terminal, stood
up, and turned to face the aft windows, looking out over the wardroom and
Spectre launch catapults, and beyond that, the aft spine of the ship.
Farther outside, a faintly glowing holographic matrix showed where an
outside observer would only see the giant asteroid Coronado was currently
imitating, only one asteroid among hundreds in a vast drift of them circling
an unnamed red giant star.
Bentall nodded and prepared to leave the room. The Captain's voice stopped
him.
"Oh, and Exec? We still have EVA teams outside the ship working on the port
nacelle, correct?"
Bentall paused and turned. "Yes, Capatain."
The Captain did not turn around, but instead spoke over his shoulder, still
staring out the aft window of the Ready Room. "When they finish, instruct
them to paint Klingon ship silhouettes for the ships we destroyed yesterday
on the hull outside the wardroom, portside. Six for the B'rels, four for
the supply ships. Tell them to leave room for more." The Captain paused,
glancing over his shoulder. "Let's see if we can outdo Tautog," he said.
Commander Bentall smiled wryly. "I'll see to it, Captain." The Exec turned
and left the Ready Room, leaving Lora Kor to his thoughts.
