When the call came from the Bridge, Captain Tebrun Lora Kor was napping in
his ready room, his sleep troubled by dreams. As he shook himself awake, he
tried to shake off remnants of the last dream, in which Jonathan Swift had
somehow been assigned as Coro's Executive Officer. The dream had not lasted
long: Swift had used the opportunities provided by the post to destroy the
Coronado and kill her Captain and crew... Lora Kor was still shaking off
this nightmare when the comm chime that had probably disturbed his sleep the
first time sounded again.
"Lora Kor here," he said, voice somewhat thick. "Go ahead." Aside from
short naps in his ready room, the Captain had been awake for 48 hours.
"Captain, the Thundercats report that they were able to catch and destroy
that last scout," Colonel Jeremy Ironside said. His voice carried no
emotion at all, as if a Klingon scout was an unmanned vehicle.
Two days before, Coronado had emerged from a class 4 nebula near the Donatu
system to find that the Federation was at war with the Klingon Empire and
Romulan Star Republic. The nebula that hid a class M planet whose
inhabitants apparently called it the Thistledown was now in enemy territory;
Coro herself was apparently at least 10 light-years behind enemy lines. The
former listening posts of the "Thin Red Line" on the Klingon border were no
more and the two closest Starfleet starbases were respectively, a) off the
air, presumably destroyed; and b) captured by Klingon forces. The Klingon
Empire and the Federation had been at continuous peace for more than three
decades. No more. Probably, never again. Surely, the Federation would no
longer seek peace with a government that would launch such suprise wars of
aggression again and again and again.
After emerging from the nebula, Coro had turned "north" toward the Triangle,
that point in space where the Federation, Klingon, and Romulan borders met.
The Captain reasoned that this would be the location of the heaviest
Starfleet resistance, since much of Starfleet's eastern defensive forces
were arrayed throughout the Triangle.
Moving as stealthily as possible, running under her holographic defenses and
using the superior range of her LORASON sensors to determine patrol patterns
from outside the range of those patrols, Coro had nearly reached the front.
There, the frigate had encountered a number of supply convoys just behind
the Klingon line of advance. Choosing the smallest and least heavily
defended of these convoys, Coro had continued north, launching a surprise
attack as the convoy passed through an uninhabited system near Yola. The
convoy's escort, three B'rel class Bird of Prey scout ships, had put up a
good fight but had been no real match for the enraged frigate. Two of the
B'rels had been destroyed in the first two exchanges of fire and the third,
heavily damaged, had turned south and east toward Starbase 12, the one that
had gone off the air. Rather than following herself, the Captain had
ordered the Coro's Spectre class fighters to finish off the damaged scout
while Coro jammed local communications.
"Very well," the Captain replied. "Instruct the fighters to rendezvous with
us in the Alphosa system. We'll break EMCON there and see if we can find
some friendlies," the Captain said. "Then instruct Commander Daren to
destroy the supply ships. If they wish to destroy themselves, fine;
otherwise, I'm authorizing their destruc--"
The Captain was interrupted by Commander Daren's voice over the comm. The
Tactical officer's voice tried to hide shock. "Captain! These are unarmed
ships--"
The Captain interrupted. "Mr. Daren, in my several lifetimes in Starfleet,
the Klingons or Romulans have launched wars of aggression eight times, the
last three years ago. Starfleet has turned them away again and again, but
apparently, the Klingon and Romulan governments do not learn from this. In
my experience, there is no such thing as an 'unarmed' Klingon vessel, and if
we do not destroy those supply ships, they will call the nearest battle
group down on us. If we had time, I'd probably look for a more subtle
solution, but we do not have time. Now, if you would, please send those
Klingons, warriors or not, to Sto Vo Kor." The Captain's voice changed to
dark amusement. "They'd no doubt thank us for it. If we weren't
light-years behind enemy lines, I'd do my level best to turn them into
prisoners. Follow my orders and put Colonel Ironside back on."
If Daren's acknowledgement was a touch hesitant, it was at least there.
Ironside's voice soon replaced Daren's on the comm. The Colonel's voice was
steady. "Captain, with all due respect, you are exhausted. I expect
Commander Bentall on the Bridge within the hour. It is my
recommendation..."
"...that I get some real sleep, no doubt. Thank you, Colonel. I'll be
pleased to follow your advice when this ship is on the Federation side of
the line. Until then, real sleep will have to wait. However, I will follow
your advice far enough to continue my nap. Barring the appearance of that
Klingon battle group I mentioned earlier, advise me when we reach either the
front lines or the Alphosa system, whichever happens first." The Captain
then broke the communication with one stabbing finger.
But outside the ready room windows, the supply ships were visible in their
futile attempt to escape the Coronado's weapons. And despite the Captain's
promise to Colonel Ironside, sleep would not come after that.
