The ships of Task Group 5.4 orbitted Hayashi in a tight group at about seven
million kilometers from the star. The Starfleet ships with metaphasic
shields operational did what they could to protect the ships that did not
have metaphasic shields. In particular, Pearl's three support ships, two of
which were civilian craft, huddled inside the MRF's framework within its
shields. Even so, one of the two civilian freighters, the S.S. Mount
Rainier, had been badly scorched by weapons fire as she had approached the
star. One of the Starfleet ships, U.S.S. Odyssey, was almost as badly off
and was also within Pearl's shields.

Almost as badly off were the three Camelynian ships. Without metaphasic
shields, they had to rely on their larger bulk and heavier armoring to stand
up to the radiation in the system. The two Camelynian destroyers orbitted
in the shadow of the much larger worldship. The crew of the worldship had
then been evacuated to the far side of the ship from the star, which was
slowly crisping in the thermionic radiation that surrounded the supergiant.

Even with metaphasic shields, most of the Starfleet ships were keeping their
crews to emergency shelters. Hayashi was in an unstable pre-nova state and
from time to time, great plumes of ejected corona were blasted from the
supergiant's photosphere. Fortunately, none of these plumes had approached
the task group yet... but it was probably only a matter of time. Even
worse, the Romulan weapon continued to orbit the Hayashi star. The weapon
was still showing a trilithium signature, which meant that it could likely
induce the star into a nova at any time the Romulans wished.

Captain Lora Kor entered the CIC, where most of the Bridge crew had
gathered... the CIC was deeply buried in the ship's saucer, unlike the
Bridge module. He didn't waste any time with pleasantries, but instead went
right to one of the control consoles.

"We managed to clean up the Romulan transmission," he said without a
prelude. Tapping a console, he brought it up in one of the CIC's many
holographic tanks. A Romulan soldier of indeterminate rank appeared.

"Hello, Starfleet group," the Romulan said, a smug smile on his face. "I'm
sorry we had to interrupt your little rendezvous, but you have something
that belongs to us... first, my congratulations on acquiring it. From what
information we've been able to piece together, it was an inspired plan that
allowed you to capture it." The Romulan's smile widened. "Pity that the
plan must end in failure. We have seen your reinforcements approaching. No
doubt you are hanging your hopes on this feeble thread. However, by now you
will have scanned our sunkiller weapon... and quite an impressive target you
 have given us for it."

The Romulan paused and turned, as if checking a nearby viewscreen. "Your
reinforcements are three hours away as I transmit this... therefore," he
said, turning back to the screen. "Therefore, I will give you two hours to
emerge from the area of the star with your shields down and your weapons
unpowered. You have my assurances that none of you will be harmed." The
Romulan's smile, if possible, became even more smug. "Your crews will be
given the protection of our undamaged ships and after a short stay on
ch'Rihan as prisoners of war, you will be returned to your government in due
time. Am I not generous? If you time it correctly, I might not even have
time to capture any of your ships before your reinforcements arrive... your
ships will merely be destroyed." The Romulan leaned back. "There is no
need to respond. Simply emerge with your shields down and your weapons
unpowered, and I will take that as your signal that you agree. Of course,
emerging with any shield or weapon powered will of course require that I
kill you... assuming that you do not bravely stand as my weapon obliterates
the star... two hours, Starfleet group."

The transmission ended and the Captain turned to the others, leaning back
against the console. "Anyone even tempted to take him..." Lora Kor hooked
a thumb in the direction of the tank. "...up on his offer?" The Captain
looked around, then nodded and turned to Dejat.

"Commander, put together a team to take Kelaka out. Every group ship that
has a survivable runabout is launching it to look for a way out of the
mousetrap. You're elected to carry Coro's honor," the Captain finished.

Dejat chuckled. "It will be well represented, sir," he said.

"I expect nothing less, Commander," Lora Kor said, smiling wryly. "Don't
attempt to engage the Romulans... just look for the hole in their blockade.
We're only picking up about 15 ships out there. That's not enough to manage
an effective blockade, therefore, they must have left a hole somewhere.
 Find it," the Captain finished.
