It was a rare thing to see Captain Tebrun Lora Kor hurry. He was normally a
very placid man... almost relaxed. Being Trill came with the advantage of
seeing the long view. As a result, he moved in an unhurried way, as if he
was slightly above day to day problems. It was even more rare to see him
angry, and noone aboard had ever seen him frightened. So, when Lora Kor
stormed out of his Ready Room onto the Bridge, hurrying, looking both angry
and frightened, more than one officer's heart rate accelerated.

Commander Jarod Bentall, in command of the Bridge, stood up and looked
around the Bridge for a second, as if expecting to see an attack in
progress. Ironside actually started to draw his phaser.

The Captain's voice rang out, barely controlled emotions seething under the
surface. "Exec, I want you to make a speed run to Starbase 23, just as fast
as you can get us there." The Captain's voice was blunt, and a little cold.
"Get Coronado moving and go to yellow alert."

Bentall blinked, but to his credit, turned almost instantly. "Commander
Dejat, best speed to Starbase 23 and don't spare the horses." Dejat had
already laid the course as the Captain specified it, and nodded to engage at
the Captain's order. Meanwhile, Bentall turned to Daren. "Yellow alert.
Sound general quarters and set security condition alpha-2 throughout the
ship, Commander Daren." For good measure, the Exec then turned to Ironside.
"Colonel, rotate working schedules so that all platoons and Spectres will be
alert and ready for action on our arrival at 23." The Colonel nodded
gravely. Beneath their feet, Coronado turned, straining, and roared into
slipstream, the sound of defense fields charging up a barely controlled
whine, yellow alert klaxons already sounding.

Bentall turned back to the Captain, who nodded. "Very good, Exec. I've
already talked to Vice Admiral Aldur. Task Force 5.4 is right behind us
moving at warp nine plus, but with Coro's slipstream drive, we'll arrive at
23 almost a week before they do," Lora Kor said. "Renegade, though, is only
a few hours behind us. Commander Daren, track their progress," the Captain
snapped. Daren nodded hurriedly and turned to comply.

"I understand, Captain -- what's wrong? What's happened?" Bentall asked.
Everyone on the Bridge turned toward the Captain.

"You remember Ka'tek vestai'Kharas?" Lora Kor asked.

"From the Klingon High Council? That Ka'tek?" Bentall asked. A year
before, Coronado had been instrumental in seeing to it that Ka'tek, an old
friend of the Captain's, had been able to take his seat on the Council
despite several rival families attempting to bar his appointment.

The Captain nodded, still tense, running his hands through his hair.
"Formerly of the High Council. He narrowly escaped an assassination attempt
from another Council member and is on the run. We have to pick him up. He
informed me that the Klingon-Romulan war that has been going on over the
last several weeks has ended suddenly... and he knows why," the Captain
said. "The transmission broke up at that point, but I've never seen Ka'tek
so terrified... or frightened at all, for that matter. Whatever it is, it's
bad." The Captain looked around the Bridge, as if assessing everyone there,
then nodded as if he approved. "Advise me as soon as we're within 10 lights
of Starbase 23. We'll be picking him up nearby. I'll provide exact
coordinates when we get closer. I'm going to try to reestablish contact
with him and find out what's happened." Without another word, Lora Kor
turned and hurried back to his Ready Room.
