"Well, not exactly a textbook first contact, but you seem to have salvaged
it rather effectively," Vice Admiral Brian Aldur said, a very slight wry
 smile on my face.

Captain Tebrun Lora Kor had the good grace to blush a bit. "Fortunately,
Admiral, the Boratis seem to be a singularly understanding people," he said.
The two men were conversing via holographic communicator. Kor sat at his
desk in his Ready Room, while the print of Coronado Savant had made for him
was visible hanging on the wall behind the Admiral's flickering image.

Aldur nodded. "Very fortunately," he said. "I'm sending Pearl and Odyssey
to you, along with Pearl's support ships. The resources in the system that
you're in seem ideal for Pearl to replentish her matter stores and get to
work rebuilding Odyssey's outer hull," he continued. "Did the Boratis
provide you with their star maps?" the Admiral asked.

Lora Kor nodded. "Yes, Admiral, they did. However, they have not been a
starfaring race for all that long -- a decade or so at most. In addition,
their stardrive seems to be very different from our warp drive. It relies
on some kind of local space-folding technology. Instead of travelling the
distance between two stars, they calibrate it to a nearby location which can
take anything from minutes to hours. It also requires a gravity field to
operate. The Boratis were somewhat incredulous when I told them we actually
travel in the space between stars..." Lora Kor smiled at the memory,
amused. "They alternated between seeming somewhat horrified by the concept,
and wondering why we waste the time passing through empty space," the
 Captain said, concluding.

"And as a result, their understanding of interstellar space is probably
 pretty limited," the Admiral said.

"Correct, Admiral," Lora Kor said, nodding. "They weren't able to provide
us with any information that would make slipstream useful in their space,
for instance. We're still going to have to go through there and map it.
All we've got is detail on fifty or sixty systems that the Boratis have
explored over the years, including a dozen locations where they've
established colonies of various sizes." Lora Kor paused. "They've also
discovered two other sentient races, Admiral -- both less advanced than
their own. Their space is all southeast of Gateway. I've sent you the
 details."

Aldur nodded. "Understood. I'll look the information over," he said.
 "Anything else?"

 "Negative, sir," Lora Kor said.

"Very well, Captain," Aldur said. "Finish your sweep of the system, then
transmit your data to us for dispersal to the task group ships. In
particular, I think it's time you took a closer look at that class M planet.
Once you're finished there, proceed north and west to the next class
M-capable star and its planets." The Admiral paused. "I'm breaking up the
groups, by the way. Fearless will be proceeding west of you, Javelin east,"
Aldur said as an afterthought. "They're receiving their orders now.
However, everyone will continue to remain close enough together that if a
ship runs into trouble or finds a way home, we can rally quickly," he
 concluded.

The Captain nodded. "Understood, Admiral. Coronado out."
