Captain Tebrun Lora Kor entered the ship's main shuttlebay to find the probe
already tractored aboard and sitting on the deck. Even as he watched, the
shuttlebay doors were closing and people were either gathering around the
object or pausing in their duties to glance at it, curiosity evident.
Pitted and scorched, the probe looked every bit of a hundred years old, and
maybe older. Visually, it looked exactly like the old-style Starfleet
survey probes that had been in use in the late 2200s. On close inspection,
it was clear that the thing was without power, and had been for some time.
Still, there was no question it was a Federation Starfleet artifact: "ted
Federation of Planets Starf" was visible on the hull, cauterized on one end
by a scorch mark and blasted away on the other by a micrometeoroid hit.
As fast as he had come down to look at the probe, the Captain was amused to
note that two of the ship's company were faster. Among the crowd clustered
around the object were Savant and Lt. Commander Janeway, both giving the
probe a going over. Janeway seemed completely absorbed in her analysis, so
Lora Kor approached Savant, who turned and nodded at the Captain's approach.
"Rather intriguing object, Captain," Savant said. "With a functional
hypergate in the Hayashi system, I suppose we should have expected something
like this."
"Are you assuming that it was deployed in the Hayashi system and found its
way through the gate, Commander?" the Captain asked.
Savant nodded. "It's certainly the possibility that makes the most sense,"
she said, then frowned. "If we were still connected to Memory Alpha, I
could check records, but I'd assume we'd find a record of a ship surveying
Hayashi a century ago and simply losing contact with the probe," she
continued. "However, there are a couple of inconsistencies with that
theor--"
Commander Janeway interrupted from where she was running a tricorder over
the forward section of the probe, frowning. "Something odd here, Captain,"
she said, tapping at the tricorder. "Starfleet probes of this era were
constructed of duranium and toranium, but this part of the probe is of a
much less sophisticated alloy..." Waving the tricorder over the section,
she frowned again and then turned off the tricorder. "Might even be
titanium," she said. "Definitely a much lower density and higher mass than
anything that is normally used." Drawing a small tool, Janeway clipped off
a two centimeter square of the material and then set it directly on the
tricorder and appeared to again get lost in the analysis.
The Captain turned back to Savant. "Any idea if we can work out where this
came from?" he asked.
Savant nodded. "I will talk to Commander Dejat... that's actually one of
the inconsistencies I was going to mention. My initial track indicates the
probe was launched from a location 'north' of us rather than 'south', from
the hypergate."
Lora Kor nodded thoughtfully. "Any possiblity that gravitational forces
have affected its course to that extent?"
"Certainly, Captain," Savant replied.
Meanwhile, Janeway stood, a troubled expression on her face. "Well, it's
definitely titanium," she said. "In fact, I'd be hard pressed to come up
with a more primitive alloy to construct something like this from.
Something else that's odd... molecular imaging dating processes indicates
that the probe is not one hundred years old. It's twenty-six."
The Captain blinked. "Twenty-six? Are you sure?"
Janeway nodded. "Almost positive, but I'll have to do a closer analysis to
confirm it. We need to take this thing apart anyway... it doesn't appear to
be completely authentic... almost as if someone was making a copy of the
original." Waving over two technicians, the Commander oversaw loading the
probe onto an antigrav pallet.
Turning back to Savant, Lora Kor said, "Commander, work with Commander Dejat
to backtrack this thing's course. Might be interesting to have a talk with
whomever built it."
