Notes from the Captain:
The major news for this week is two LOAs caused by computer problems:
both Masters (aka Major Thomas Wayne) and Skylooker (aka Lt. Aramis
Skylooker) are having computer problems serious enough to warrant long-
term LOAs. :-/ Hope you guys are back soon!!

We're currently orbiting the large yellow star just "north" of Gateway.
To interpret this picture: Gateway is the red giant star we entered M64
nearby. Each square on this graphic represents a sector: an area of
space approximately 20 light-years on a side. For simplicity, this is a
2D drawing; assume that anything not shown is not important. ;-) The
colors of stars on the drawing represents the color of the star if we
visit it. Orange and yellow stars have the best chance of supporting
"life as we know it." The size of each star indicates the mass of things
in orbit. Larger dots are stars that have more mass in orbit -- planets
or other massive objects, in other words. The Gateway system has a
hypergate in orbit; other systems with hypergates would appear roughly
that same size on this or future drawings. However, we're not picking
up any other neutronium objects on this scan.
The six largest yellow star markers are the systems most likely to have
class M planets in orbit. The large yellow/white mass in the top center
is a very large, high energy nebula of some kind. As we do more
exploring, I'll be sending out other pictures like this one. :-)

Sim Title: "Voyager's Lament", Part 2
Withour our immediate repair problems solved, Coronado has been assigned
by Vice Admiral Aldur to explore the local space "north" of the Gateway
system. Assigned with us are U.S.S. Fearless and the Camelynian
destroyer Javelin. Though we're all in the same groups, the three ships
have been ranging to different locations to expand our search radius.
Still, the three ships were together when we entered the closest system
on our route to Gateway with planets in orbit. Dropping out of warp,
we discovered a stable yellow star surrounded by a family of seven
planets, one of which read as marginally class M. The remaining worlds
were a various combination of rocky planets, gas giants, and a large
outer asteroid belt. The system appeared to be uninhabited... however,
there was a small alien survey craft in orbit of the class M planet.
The class M planet is interesting in that it keeps a single face turned
toward its star, making one side of the planet very warm, the other very
cold. An alien landing craft from the survey ship was on the surface in
the "twilight" area between the two regions.
Close observation of the survey craft confirmed that it was piloted by
a single individual. The ship itself was reminiscent of late 21st
century technology on Earth, with missile weapons and primitive
transporter technology in addition to a hyperlight drive apparently not
based on subspace principles. The drive, in fact, appeared to be some
sort of inertialess gravimetric drive of some sort and probably allows
both sublight and hyperlight travel using the same drive, though we only
observed it in its sublight mode. The main ship was associated with a
lander on the surface. The lander had a crew of ten. Upon Coro's entry
into the system, the alien ship hailed using light-speed radio and asked
our intentions. Surprisingly and for reasons which are quite unclear,
the universal translator had almost no trouble developing a translation
matrix despite the fact that the alien language was previously
completely unknown. The ship identified itself as being piloted by a
species called the Boratis.
The pilot of the ship agreed to come aboard Coro, and that's when we got
our second shock: Boratis are six limbed, with two legs and four arms.
Their primary arms are apparently geared toward strength, while two
shorter arms are geared toward fine manipulation. The individual Boratis
was named Calamar Turnam and seemed intensely curious about us. After
secretly advising Colonel Ironside that noone aboard should share data
regarding advanced technology with the Boratis, the Captain took Calamar
on a tour of the ship. The Colonel returned to the Bridge.
Unfortunately, Lt. Commander Janeway chose that moment to launch a probe
to investigate the possibilities of mining deuterium from the gas giant
and recovering metallic ores from the asteroid field. Commander Dejat
also maneuvered the ship to make these investigations easier. The
Boratis lander returned to the mothership to find their pilot gone and
a large alien ship accelerating toward them, firing projectiles! Savant
wryly referred to this as a standard "Coronado-style first contact," but
Colonel Ironside was not amused and neither was the Captain when he was
informed of events. The Captain asked Calamar Turnam to reassure his
people that Coro's crew was peaceful despite their suspicious actions.
Calamar was not only successful, but asked permission to remain aboard as
a diplomatic envoy and to learn more about us. Since we have no allies
yet in our new galaxy, the Captain agreed and asked Engineering to
provide the Boratis ship with a portable subspace communications array
so that the Boratis captain can keep in touch with his pilot.

to the tour and allow Mister Ironsides to finish the job in his.. usual
way ^_^
