 Notes from the Captain:

Welcome to galaxy M64! :-) This week was a very good opener and intro
to the dangers and realities that we'll be facing. Remember, the graphic
at the address below is available to introduce you to the region we're in:

 http://www.jestertrek.com/coro2400/bodies/setting/gateway.gif

To interpret this picture: Gateway is the red giant star we're currently
orbiting. Each square on this graphic represents a sector: an area of
space approximately 20 light-years on a side. For simplicity, this is a
2D drawing; assume that anything not shown is not important. ;-) The
colors of stars on the drawing represents the color of the star if we
visit it. Orange and yellow stars have the best chance of supporting
"life as we know it." The size of each star indicates the mass of things
in orbit. Larger dots are stars that have more mass in orbit -- planets
or other massive objects, in other words. The Gateway system has a
hypergate in orbit; other systems with hypergates would appear roughly
that same size on this or future drawings. However, we're not picking
up any other neutronium objects on this scan.

The six largest yellow star markers are the systems most likely to have
class M planets in orbit. The large yellow/white mass in the top center
is a very large, high energy nebula of some kind. As we do more
exploring, I'll be sending out other pictures like this one. :-)

Everyone also please welcome Cadet Patrick McKeown, who is the newest
member of the Coro's Marine Corps contingent. Welcome, McKeown!! :-)

 I'll see you next week!

Sim Title: "Voyager's Lament", Part 1

Task Group 5.4, including U.S.S. Coronado, is now trapped in the galaxy
known in the Milky Way as "M64" or the "Black Eye" galaxy. M64 is about
nineteen million light-years from the Milky Way, and about 40,000 light-
years in diameter. The galaxy gets its nickname because of a dark grey
"dust cloud" region that obscures the galaxy's core when viewed from the
Milky Way. Coro found herself in a system we have nicknamed "Gateway."
A disabled Traxati hypergate shares the system with us. With on
immediately available route home, Vice Admiral Brian Aldur, in command
of the group, ordered nine ships into groups of three to explore the
immediate area. Meanwhile, the remaining ships will remain in the
Gateway system and attempt to find a way back through the hypergate.
Coro's exploration group is made up of herself, U.S.S. Fearless, a
Prometheus class light cruiser, and C.S. Javelin, a Camelynian destroyer.

Our exploration group was given the direction to proceed "north" from
Gateway toward the center of M64. En route, there are four systems in
fairly close proximity to each other, each within 22 light-years of the
Gateway system. Two of these systems register as having one or more
potential class M planets in orbit. In addition, we are under orders to
conduct high-resolution sensor sweeps of the area that we pass through.
 Until we complete these sweeps, we can safely travel only at warp speeds;
Coro's slipstream drives will be useless to us. Therefore, initiating
LORASON pulses as we moved, we headed north. Our immediate targets are a
blue star and a yellow star, both without detected planets. After that,
we hit the first of two systems with a possible class M world.

While en route, a number of the crew considered our situation while others
worked to repair Coronado. The Captain called Lt. Commander Daren into
his Ready Room and over beverages, explained the severity of our situation
to the Commander. Currently, the science teams aboard Odyssey consider it
very likely that these two gates -- the gates in Hayashi and Gateway, were
a "spur line" in the Traxati hypergate network. Further, it is also
likely that this spur line has been abandoned by the Traxati for hundreds,
or even thousands of years. If that is the case, it is unlikely that we
will uncover another hypergate. After explaining this grim possibility to
Commander Daren, Captain Lora Kor then offered Daren the position of
Executive Officer. Daren accepted, becoming Coro's new XO.

In other parts of the ship, Colonel Ironside interviewed one of the new
Marines from Douglas MacArthur, Chief Tlaloco worked in Sickbay, once
again in violation of the terms of his probation, and Lieutenant Oswald
and her team worked to repair Coro's damage. In particular, Oswald
reported that we're going to have to find a source of raw materials, iron
ores and deuterium in particular. Finally, Lieutenant Janeway spent her
time in Astrometrics/CIC, developing our new map of the area. In the
process, she discovered what appears to be a 100+ year-old Starfleet
probe of some kind. Coro changed course to investigate...

 Promotions:
Jeremy Ironside, from Marine Lt. Colonel to Marine Colonel
Last promotion date: 21-Aug-00, 31 sims (inc. two double-length)
Fraser, aka Colonel Jeremy Ironside, has been a member of
Coronado's crew for exactly three years now, and I was happy
to be able to recognize his long standing and outstanding
contributions to Coro with a well-deserved promotion to
Colonel. Fras is one of Coro's most dedicated simmers, one
of the simmers that makes Coro what it is... thank you, Fras!

Kathryn Janeway, from Lieutenant to Lt. Commander
Last promotion date: Unknown, 15 sims (inc. one double-length)
Lieutenant Janeway, a relatively recent addition to the Coro
family, has proven herself an able role-player and member of
the crew. Coro has traditionally had a series of excellent
science officers, and Kath looks well-poised to continue the
           tradition. Keep the faith, Kath!

 Recognitions:
None this week, but check back next week!

 Academy Completions:
None this week (Get out there and take a class!)

Exchange of the Week: The new XO hasn't figured out the job yet... ;-)
<FCCO_LoraKor> Ahhh... a misunderstanding, is it? Well, let's
see you misunderstand this. ::extends a hand toward Daren::
<CCMC_Ironside> ::looks at Daren and raises an eyebrow::
<LtSI_KJaneway> ::shudders at the thought of what may be next::
 <LCTC_Daren> ::takes the Captain's hand <<I guess>>::
 <CCMC_Ironside> <<LOL>>
 <Savant> ((he hee!))
<mccb_Tlaloco> burn her! If she survives it, she's a witch!
<LCTC_Daren> ::searches his pocket:: Ah yes ::hands the captain a black
 pip::
<FCCO_LoraKor> ::looks at his hand, then at the assembled crew:: Give
him time. He's new at this. ::winks, then turns the fearsome look back
 on Janeway::
 * Savant offers the Captain a small box, as Daren's obviously too
confused or overcome by rage to do anything proper ^_-
<FCCO_LoraKor> Lieutenant Janeway, despite the fact that so many seem to
want to burn you as a witch, never let it be said that I do not recognize
a contribution to Starfleet's highest ideals when I see one.
<FCCO_LoraKor> I take great pleasure in promoting you to the rank of
Lieutenant Commander, with all rights and priveliges of that rank.
 Congratulations, Commander!
