Coronado swung around at high impulse, heading back for the fueler. The
four manta-shaped warships swung around with her, maintaining a tight
formation around the frigate.
"Battle stations," the Captain said grimly, holding the arms of his chair.
"Stand by aft weapons. Lieutenant Ian, take the Mission Ops station;
prepare to pull the Marines and the civilians off that fueler." The Bridge
lights darkened as the klaxons sounded; Lora Kor braced himself for the
first blasts from the Omega craft.
But the blasts did not come.
"Captain," Commander Daren said from Tactical. "They're ignoring us!"
Lora Kor stood and headed for the Tactical station. "What? That doesn't
make any sense!" In the holographic tank, the four manta-shaped craft
accelerated past Coronado, heading for the fueler. A moment later, they
appeared in front of the Coro as they continued accelerating past her. "I'm
not reading any weapons signatures..." Daren frowned. "As a matter of
fact, I'm not reading much in the way of power signatures at all. Fire on
them?" The Captain frowned, then shook his head.
On board the fueler, Colonel Ironside popped up from behind a console long
enough to fire several dozen hard rounds into the closest adversary... and
growled when they didn't have any more effect than the beam fire. He
dropped back behind the console just in time to have it nearly shredded in
front of him by the humanoid's weapon. A moment later, though, there was
the high-pitched whine of a transporter.
"Captain," Lieutenant Ian reported from Mission Ops, "the Omega ships have
pulled out the hijackers. Our people are alone over there." Lora Kor
looked over in time to see the four manta-shaped ships fade out of sight in
the holographic tank as they jumped to warp away from the fueler and Coro.
"Omega never pulls out of a fight they can win!" Daren said from Tactical,
shaking his head in disbelief.
"I would tend to agree, Commander, but I'm not going to question our luck...
yet," the Captain said, heading back for his chair. He noted that a medical
team had reached the Bridge and was seeing to the Exec. "Savant, bring us
back into transporter range. Lieutenant Ian, have the wounded returned to
Coro, and let's put the Engineering team on that thing."
"Aye, sir," both said, then settled in to work on it.
The Captain turned to Daren. "Commander, we need to determine what happened
here today. Get Ensign Phontam up here and start going over those sensor
logs."
Daren nodded, then said, "Captain, Colonel Ironside is calling from the
fueler. Also, the fighters are calling in and want to know if they should
return to Coro."
Lora Kor shook his head. "Have the fighters maintain a CAP around us until
we can get this fueler moving." He sat down. "Put the Colonel on screen,"
he said.
Ironside appeared in the holographic tank, looking more than a little
annoyed. "Captain, someone pulled the hijackers off this thing. The good
news is the fueler is secure and Lieutenant Oswald's engineering team is
here," he said. "The bad news is that in the firefight, a lot of systems
got torn up pretty good. I'd recommend we start beaming the crew and
passengers over to Coro in case we have to ditch her," he said.
Lora Kor nodded. "Good idea, Colonel. We'll get right on it," he said,
looking over at Ian, who nodded back. "Any idea who it was you were
fighting over there?" he asked.
"Not a clue," Ironside growled. "Only that our weapons weren't having any
effect on them. They looked human," he continued, "but I've never seen a
human do that. The fact that those ships pulled them off suggests they were
Omega-controlled, though."
Lora Kor nodded. "There's a Starfleet brief going around the fleet right
now reporting that Omega has the ability to possess the bodies of humanoids
for brief periods," he said. "We'll check it out. In the meantime, we have
to determine why they pulled out. That's definitely not in their
character," he said.
Ironside nodded. "I'll get my people over here to start pulling this ship
apart looking for clues. Marine assault out."
