Notes from the Captain:
Happy election week to those in Canada! Monday's sim was our last
tactical sim for a while; we'll be getting into some more character-
oriented stuff for a while. ::chuckles:: Hope nobody minds...
Sim Title: "A Rumor of War", Part 3
Coronado slipped into position to recapture the Starfleet fueler that had
apparently been hijacked. Dropping out of slisptream, we beamed a Marine
assault team on board to deal with the hijackers. Unfortunately, the
Marines' weapons had no effect on them! Weapons fire passed right
through their bodies. Worse still, as the assault progressed, four
ships, apparently Omega Manta class attack ships, dephased around Coro!
Strangely however, the Omega ships withdrew after beaming off their
hijackers, then fled the area -- decidedly non-Omega-like behaviour, to
say the least. We were left with a severely damaged fueler; after the
Marines secured her, Lieutenant Oswald's engineering team beamed aboard.
While the Marines held the ship, the engineers attempted to repair the
fueler, and our fighter escort maintained a close patrol, the rest of the
senior officers attempted to determine just what had happened. In more
than 40 engagements, Omega ships had never fled battle in which they held
the obvious advantage. The hijackers were odd, as well -- Savant was
sharp-eyed enough to note that there were only four unique hijackers,
though there were 12 of them. Either we were dealing with three sets of
quintuplets, or the hijackers were in some way artificial. Close scans
of the Omega ships revealed that they were using phasing cloaks; after a
couple of abortive attacks by the partially out of phase mantas, Coro's
crew was betting that the Omega ships were holograms as well. Meanwhile,
one of the fighter patrols, while investigating the debris from the
fueler's unlucky escorts, found that much of the debris was still in a
state of phasing flux -- one fighter even got caught in the flux.
The danger to the ship from the phasing/dephasing ships was still very
real -- during one attack, one of the mantas partially dephased while
passing *through* Coronado, doing very real damage to the ship as it
passed through! Eliminating the phasing cloak as an advantage became
paramount. Ensign Tempus managed to find a way to use our deflector
dish to disrupt the cloaks briefly, at the cost of our ability to raise
shields. The Captain decided that this wasn't much of a sacrifice,
since the shields were useless against the phased attackers, and ordered
Tempus to deploy the deflector pulse.
The trapped fighter was pushed clear by the pulse, which also caught two
of the manta ships... when the ships went out of phase, Commander Daren
hammered them. The weapons strikes apparently did enough damage to both
knock out the cloak, and disrupt a holographic generator... revealing a
Ferengi Marauder class ship! From what we can guess, the Ferengi were
attempting to steal the fueler and its cargo, while placing the blame for
the hijacking on Omega, but the Captain wasn't interested in hearing their
story. He ordered the Ferengi ship disabled and captured. Coronado will
tow it to Starbase 247, where the Ferengi will be held pending review of
the multiple charges against them, including the deaths on the escorts.
