Notes from the Captain:
A very happy Thanksgiving to those in the U.S.! For those simmers in
Canada, happy election week. May your elections go better than ours
did. ;-)
Welcome back to Lt. Commander Fornan Dejat, who ended his leave of
absense this week! McC apparently completed his driving course
successfully. We'll see if it improves Dejat's piloting skills. ;-)
Sim Title: "A Rumor of War", Part 2
Late in the ship's night, the Coronado received an priority message from
Starfleet Command. On contacting Starbase 742, Coro learned that a
Federation fueler and passenger ship, along with her two escorts, had not
transmitted their twice-daily call in. These calls have been required of
all ships passing between Starbases 247 and 742 since the Traxati and
X!chi hijackings began several weeks ago. When an emergency message was
transmitted to the fueler, the ship responded only with a coded burst
indicating the ship had been overrun by a hostile alien force. The
fueler is typical of such ships replentishing Starbase 742; most of them,
including this one, are also registered as passenger transports. Since
Coro was only a few light-years from the fuelers position, we were
ordered to intercept and investigate.
The fueler was about an hour away at slipstream. While en route, Colonel
Ironside prepared the Marines for a possible assault on the fueler and
Lt. Major Wayne got the fighters ready to provide cover. The Captain was
worried, however, because the ship can travel faster than a LORASON
pulse. Because of this, we would be approaching the area almost blind.
However, dropping out of slipstream long enough to transmit such a pulse
would announce our position and approach to whatever hostile force had
taken over the fueler. After discussing it with Commander Daren and the
XO, the Captain decided to risk it. The ship dropped out of slipstream
long enough to transmit the pulse; Daren, Ironside, and the Captain
headed down to the CIC to review the results.
The pulse was revealing about some details, but not about others. We
were able to determine that there were 138 people aboard the fueler, and
that it was apparently not being escorted. We were also able to find
the debris from the fueler's two escorts, indicating that both escorts
had been destroyed. Unfortunately, the pulse did not reveal who or what
destroyed the escorts. However, it did reveal a series of troubling
energy and radition anomalies around the fueler. Even more troubling,
there was absolutely no evidence of either Traxati or X!chi in the area,
our first thought as to the identity of the attackers. As a result, the
Captain ordered a high-speed, minimum exposure intercept -- the idea
being to assault the fueler before any enemy ships in the area had a
chance to react. The plan did not, however, come off as he hoped.
Coro dropped into the area behind the fueler, under Savant's hand at the
helm. The Marines were then beamed aboard in two waves, while the
Engineering teams that would take command of the freighter stood by for
the Marines to do their jobs. Cadet Cavanaugh was able to identify 12
hijackers in various parts of the ship. However, when the Marines
attacked these individuals, they turned out to be immune to weapons fire;
they seemed to be partially out of phase! Even worse, when Coro revealed
herself, four Omega manta-shaped warships dephased around her!
